It is worth remembering that ethnicity is a social construct. Therefore, groups of people who actively execute their race and ethnicity, witness its influence on their health and psychological state. Some races and ethnicities had been living discriminated for so long, that they indeed have lower ambitions about their possible achievements. Lots of issues contribute to this subject, in particular, the existence of discrimination and poor access to education and employment. It has a direct influence on the standards of living, living conditions of people and their life expectancy.
The most vivid example of the impact that the ethnicity has is the way indigenous tribes live in the modern Australia. Their life expectancy is 20 years less than that of non-Indigenous population. Aborigines live separate from the main population groups, establishing their own reservations and poorly involving into social and political life of their country. They suffer from poor access to education and employment, while other population groups enjoy better conditions of living, well-qualified medical assistance and higher salaries.
As discrimination is the number one problem that leads to poor health and psychological problems of the discriminated ethnical groups, it should be taken into account while drafting new governmental health care policies. Stratification on the basis of education, housing, health, employment and income exists in every society, but ethnicity should not be the issue that determines one’s right to succeed in life. The governments’ first responsibility is to provide such policy directives that would establish an active opposition to discrimination.
