In recent years, the simulation studies were given much importance; huge number budgets have been devoted for the simulation studies. There are three types of simulation studies; continuous, discrete event, and monte carlo. This article analysis about the different indicators used for selecting the best discrete event simulation software. There is huge number of simulation software available, the user has to choose the best suitable simulation software among the huge number of packages. Hlupil and Paul has presented several criteria for the evolution and comparison of the simulation package with the levels of importance for the particular purpose. Tewoldeberban et al proposes a two phase evaluation and selection methodology for selecting the simulation software. Hlupil, Paul, Tewoldeberban et al with some researchers proposed some indicators for selecting the best simulation software. The institute of operations research and the management sciences (OR/MS) proposed a model for evaluating the best simulation software. The information is given to the vendors so that they can produce the appropriate simulation package to satisfy the customers need.
Banks and Gibjon; Hlupic, Irani and Paul; Ahmed, Hall and Welnick proposed a several indicators, which can guide the users in choosing the best simulation software. The first study in the simulation is the system modeling. The following criteria should be considered for modeling the system; terminology used, modeling transparency, runtime application, conceptual model generator, entity time, initialization, real time simulation model, elements in the model, and the specifications of the length measures. The simulation modeling tool should consider the hardware/system requirements, and the educational needs. The efficiency is one of the important indicators for evaluating the system software. In this evaluation, following items are consider; robustness level, model status saving, automatic saving, interaction, case sensitivity, reliability, and cases of model editing. The software testability is one of the important criteria for the evaluations of the simulation software. The testing involves the logic check, easy debugging, flow analysis, etc. A well designed simulation modeling tool must possess some facility in the system modeling.
Once a simulation model is created and verified, it needs to be used and executed. The statistical facilities should include some statistical distribution functions. The I/O issues may arise because of the coding aspects; a good coding aspect should be implemented. The software compatibility should be good; the software should be compatible for any of the operating systems. The software compatibility is one of the important indicators for evaluating the software. The visual effects like animation, etc should be considered while choosing the software. The evaluation of simulation packages are performed by a couple of approaches. The first approach is to evaluate the analytic hierarchical process, and the second approach is to evaluate the indicators and ranking the simulation packages. The analytic hierarchical process approach separates the evaluation into the hierarchical process and attempts to reduce the constrain in the judgment. The second approach is to evaluate the indicator and should provide the ranking for those indicators. The several indicators, which presented in the manuscript helps to select the best software package. The author has presented the entire important indicator for choosing the best simulation software package. The indicators are well organized in the paper, which can guide the user for choosing the best simulation software. This article reviewed the recent approach for evaluating the best simulation software. This paper can help the user for selecting the best simulation package for the particular use.
