The effect of stress of the workplace productivity is not a myth. Stress has negative and costly impacts on workplace productivity. The costs of compensation associated with stress related illness are extremely high. Apart from costs, stress also affects management of employees and resources as well. There is a lot of cost and implications saved when stress at the workplace is properly handled. The average savings per employee add up to 1,650 USD. As a consequence, it is imperative for the organization to conduct interviews so as to determine the causes, levels and extend of stress in the workplace (Colligan and Eileen 90).
The negative effect of workplace stress on productivity is widespread. Workplace stress affects productivity in more ways than one. It results to absenteeism, low morale demonstrated by employees as a result of stress. Apart from low morale and absenteeism, there is higher insurance claim for employees’ physical ailments (Clements 27). Elevated amount of stress at the workplace can severely interfere with the morale of the employees. Reduced moral translates to poor performances on workplace operation and functions. This highly affects the productivity of the employees. Additionally, workplace management is also affected by stress given that its daunting to manage low spirited employees (Kompier and Cary 16).
It is therefore imperative for organizations to take measures that mitigate the effects of stress at the workplace. Some of the proven measures that can be employed to mitigate these effects include; proper nutrition, teaching employees various relaxation techniques such as breathing exercises and skills to relax, introducing wellness campaigns and counseling of employees under stress.
