Finding a right major is not an easy task, when it comes to undergraduate students. Most of them need more time to figure out what major will be better for them. Indeed, some students tend to choose a major that interests them more than other majors, but right after graduation they realize it wasn’t a right choice. Therefore, students pursue undergraduate degree in one field and then graduate degree in another one.
However, some students are luckier, because they chose a right major from the very beginning. Such students still need to gain some extra knowledge and skills that could help them be more successful – so they decide to choose another major and go to the graduate school that specializes in a different area.
For example, Victoria is a new student at Claremont graduate university, her undergrad is Fine Arts. She is fond of her undergraduate major, but she decided to switch to Business Art. She believes that this change of a major will help her be more successful. Nevertheless, this change is very hard for her, since she doesn’t know enough about business.
Victoria believes that combining the knowledge in business and art can increase her opportunity to obtain her career goals. Business Art can improve her ability to evaluate artworks. Also, she will be able to understand the differences between different art markets, how to sell artworks in different galleries, art fairs and exhibitions. These reasons make this student more interested in choosing Business Art major.
Business major is one of the hardest fields, especially for students, who didn’t take any business courses before. Of course changing to Business Art won’t be that easy, because Victoria may struggle with Business classes. However, if she combines business and art knowledge, she will be able to reach her goal and become successful in her future career. It doesn’t mean she cannot be successful if she stays with her Fine Arts major. She spent years studying Fine Arts, so she has a strong background in this major now. Victoria can reinforce her skills in Fine Arts by obtaining a Master’s degree in this major. Studying will be easier for her, and she will be able to focus on improving her skills in Art.
It’s hard to find a major that will be the right choice for an undergraduate student. There are two possible options for such students – stay with a major they used to study all these years or choose a new one. If a student thinks they can achieve more by changing the subject, they could choose another major they find interesting. But if students are not sure they can handle new subjects, they’ve never studied before; they could pursue the same degree. It will be much easier for them and they could also become much better and develop their skills in their major.
