It is unfortunate that the school allows the children to choose what they want to eat realizing the danger it causes on their health. The lunch program does not encourage children to eat healthy food but instead give them what they seem to enjoy rather than what is good for their health.
The school lunch program follows set rules, which appear to be set by the government. There are specific guidelines, which are followed when preparing the foods that have to be followed to the latter. The program appears to favor processed foods, which are easy and quick to prepare compared to Jamie’s natural foods, which take quite some time. Furthermore, the attitude of the school administrators made it difficult for Jamie to convince them that the program would work. They were not ready to buy it in the first place.
Even though the processed foods are preferred by the school because of their easy accessibility and preparation, they are costly to the lives of the children. In the process of reducing the expenditures and time used to prepare the foods, they are putting the health and life of the children at risk. This hence implies that the country will incur more on the cost of medication also have to lose young people at an early age.
Iron cage of rationality is a concept that implies how people are trapped by certain systems and believes which are contrary to traditional values. For instance, the American society is concerned more on cutting current costs at the expense of future consequences. Processed foods have been considered a cheaper and convenient option yet they do not consider the future expenses on the economy due to sicknesses and premature death.
