Gender is an aspect of an individual’s sexuality. Gender defines that expectations of society on how people should act and think pas either male or female. To identify a person’s gender identity, you have to look at the gender as well as gender roles of that individual. The way they behave, dress and physical appearance as well, determine the gender. On the other hand, sexual orientation entails the attraction different people have towards a particular sex. While most people show opposite sex attraction, some show same sex attraction. The display of sex orientation to a particular sex and gender identity, can be identified from people’s behaviors at different socialization points like a mall or cafeteria.
A mall is a shopping center with different shops where people do bulky buying. Additionally, malls have establishments of restaurants, movie theatres, parks and even cafeteria. In such a place you expect to find different people with different gender and sexual orientation. Through their behavior at a mall, one can easily tell the gender and sexual orientation of a person. Observing men and women interacting in a mall for thirty minutes gives a clue to someone’s gender and sexual orientation.
Young men and women in a movie theatre would come as couples; a man and a woman. Male are observed to bring in their female partners to the movie theatre, judging from the way male counterparts take control of every single happening while watching the movie. The man pays for the tickets as he explains to the lady everything taking place in the mall movie theatre. This express the cultural expectations of a man to take control. At the movie theatre, male and female are generally attracted to members of the opposite sex. Within the mall, at park several people come in as groups of the same sex. The males seem enticed by the female groups, while the female seem uninterested in the males’ raise of alarm. The young male wink as they whistle at the female counterparts. They are expressing their sexual orientation to the opposite sex.
Scholars have written that young men and women at their teenage years will show their sex orientation and gender. Most male teenagers will get attracted to their female counterparts, while some will get attracted to colleagues of the same sex. Young men will wink at every lady of their age that they sport as they share moments at the park. The ladies at most cases would ignore the winks, while some brave ladies would respond back with either a positive or negative feedback. The ladies interested would smile back, while those not happy would throw an abuse to the young men.
At the restaurants and cafeteria, gender and sex orientation is also expressed. In this setting gender is widely expressed with cultural expectations of men and women. The women in most scenarios would select the item to consume from the menu booklet as the men watched on. After they are through with the food selected, the male would pay for the food as they walk the ladies out of the place. This shows the cultural expectations of the society for both men and women. Women are expected to prepare food for the family, and this is vivid with the ladies deciding what meals to be bought. Men are expected by the society to be the providers, and this is shown by the men having to pay for the meals at the mall.
In conclusion, gender and sex orientation are determined based on different dimensions. Culturally, gender is differentiated by the gender roles that different people engage in. Even in the twenty first century, specific roles are identified to a particular gender. For instance, the preparing of food identified with the women. The providers of the meals are considered to be the men at most times. On the other side, sexual orientation is based on sexual attraction, behavior and identity. The male are attracted and identified with the female. The female are attracted to the male. There is another group that is attracted to the members of the same sex. Through a person’s behavior one can tell the sexual orientation of a person, either directly or indirectly; as there are others who public show interest in the opposite sex while they are actually interested in the same sex. They do so to hide their sexual orientation due to discrimination. Therefore, the display of sex orientation to a particular sex and gender identity, can be identified from people’s behaviors.
