Gender equality is one of the currently debated gender issues in the world in different forums. The media plays a very critical role in shaping the minds and opinions of the public on gender issues. While media coverage highlights the issues that women face in the society today and the varied possible solutions as well as comparing the models used in different countries, it also creates a societal balance, which ensures that people live in an equal society where gender roles are shared. Some of the challenges that women face in eth society today includes underrepresentation in forums and leadership positions, violence against women, and cultural practices, which are considered retrogressive.
The two media events that will be discussed in this paper include the creation of a global platform in The Guardian, which is a women's rights and gender equality section. This section provides the platform for addressing the issues affecting girls and women in the society. It also provides a platform for the women rights movements around the world. In another similar column in The New York Times, the editors of the Global Agenda sought the contributions of different people on the possibility of achieving gender equality as well as what gender equality means.
According to different cultural backgrounds, the issue of gender equality majorly entails the feminist activities such as advocating for equal rights for women.
There are alarming statistics about the problems that women face in the society today including marriage abuse, female genital mutilation (FGM), forced marriage, education and work. These media events have influenced my morals and ethics towards viewing women as underprivileged members of the society. Additionally, my personal morals, cultural influences, and ethics affect my view of the cultural practices against women as backward.
