Introduction
The issue of global warming has recently become more contentious. Ideally, a great debate exists among numerous individuals on whether it is real. According to MacMillan (Par. 1), the average global temperature over the past fifty years has risen at the most rapid rate in recorded history. In essence, the climate scientists connect the warming of the oceans and atmosphere, a strong decrease in the sea ice, and ocean level rise, among other climate-associated changes to the rise in the global temperature.
The greenhouse gasses including carbon dioxide, water vapor, methane, and nitrous oxide contribute to global warming by obstructing the heat from escaping (Earth Science Communications Team N.p.). The carbon dioxide gas originates from the human activities, for example, burning of fossil fuels and permanent removal of forests and natural processes, for example, volcanic eruptions. Methane gas comes from human activities such as agriculture and natural sources such as the decay of wastes in the landfills. Nitrous Oxide gas originates from the human activities such as the production of nitric acid, burning of fossil fuels, and soil cultivation practices. Water vapor arises from the evaporation due to the high temperatures in the earth’s atmosphere.
The scientific evidence for global warming is overwhelming. Scientists have utilized climate models to project various aspects of the upcoming climate including the ocean acidity, temperature, ice and snow, ocean level, and precipitation (EPA N.p.). Specifically, the climate scientists and scientific societies such as the American Meteorological Society, American Geophysical Union, and IPCC have primarily released several studies and announcements, which demonstrate the overwhelming agreement that global warming is real. They blame human activities for the rapid rise in the global temperature. The deniers of climate change do not present facts to disprove global warming. What they present are just myths.
The global warming problem will continue to affect human beings, animals, and plants negatively if nothing is done to resolve it. Thus, it is high time for every individual concerned about the future generations to play a role in resolving this problem. The gaseous pollutants, which facilitate global warming can be decreased through the reduction in the human activities such as deforestation, burning of fossil fuels, and agricultural practices, among others. The current impact of global warming can be reversed through the planting of trees and reduction in the greenhouse gas emissions. As a future engineering professional, I will play a significant role in protecting the environment from global warming through utilizing the engineering principles, which reduce the industrial activities that contribute to the greenhouse gas emissions.
