After taking the survey, I was a little surprised by the overall results about my footprint. I try to live a green life but it would still take two of the planet Earths if everybody lived as I am living now. I am surprised because I thought I was making a noticeable difference with the way I am living. I recycle everything I am able to recycle. I also carpool whenever I am able to, and use public transportation when it is available so that I can decrease greenhouse gas emissions. I do contribute to air travel each year, however, and little of my food is locally grown, or fresh. I try to be conservative with how my home is run though. For example, I turn off lights when they are not of service to anybody, and I typically only replace household goods when they need replacing. That it takes two planets to sustain people who live as I do is mildly surprising.
As a country, there are many things people can do to reduce their ecological footprint. I do not see enough people recycling, for example. I recycle everything I can because it is one of the easiest ways I have found to reduce my ecological footprint. With the efforts I make in my small home while trying to not use a lot of energy, my results still say I use too much energy and land. Those who are not trying as hard as I am are likely also using too much energy and land then. We could all attempt, then, not to use so much energy and land, wasting it as a resource. Using land to plant crops in order to have locally grown food would be a way to decrease ecological impact. As a result, we could live in smaller, more energy efficient homes. The energy could begin to come from renewable resources, which would cut down a lot on the ecological impact the country has on the environment. As a country, we could work to restore the forestland’s health, as well. My results show I am a drain on the forestlands resources, which is bad for the environment. Once more, if I am attempting to leave as little impact as possible, others who are not trying are likely a bigger drain. The country must work together in order to stop deforestation, as we need trees for oxygen and survival.
