A gym is a club which is private, or a place which gives facilities meant to maintain and improve health and physical fitness. It originates from the word gymnasium, which in today’s world is a sporting activity which does not involve much class work. Instead, it involves only physical education (Coucher, 2013). A gym is a place where people go to exercise and stay fit. However, there is a misconception in the social community. Before going into detail, a gym is a place for everybody. Each individual, no matter what race, body size or even hair color must be healthy. With the kind of lifestyles that people lead today, with the busy schedules and no time to rest, people do not notice their declining health patterns. Yet, some do not visit the gym. A gym offers facilities mean for strenuous activities that make one’s body active. When a person goes to the gym, blood flows freely in the body. One also becomes more active and the normal tiredness associated with somebody who does not do physical exercise disappears (Donellan, 2003). Nevertheless, people associate gym with people who are overweight, people that have huge bodies and are very unhealthy. Thus, my thesis is born. A gym is not only a place for overweight individuals.
A gym has much equipment meant for the exercise of the whole body. As discussed above, physical exercise is good for the body. Biologically, what it does is just to burn the calories present in the body and reduce the risk of heart failure as well as reduce obesity. Obesity is a disease which must be avoided at all costs. This is because too much fat is not healthy. It leads to unnatural and premature deaths. When a person dies young because of obesity, it becomes a very sad thing in any community. Premature deaths should be avoided. In the community I live in, there are a number of gyms which are strategically placed. These gyms are stocked very well. Equipment that exist in the gyms are; Cybex Arc Trainer, Cybex Bravo, Grid Foam Roller, G-Force RT Recunbent Bike and FreeCross Premium Ellptical Bike. All of them have specific functions. For example, the two types of bikes are meant to give the illusion of riding a bike. This exercises the thighs and improves the health of the legs. The Cybex Bravo is for the arms. The Roller is for the thorax part of the body. It helps in the flattening of the tummy. There are other facilities such as weights and the Stretcher. All these are meant exclusively for the exercising of the body. In addition to the above, the gym usually has trainers that help novices and even gym diehards to get healthy. They also teach them how to use the specific facilities (Coucher, 2013).
As now noted, the equipments are not meant for a specific group of people. Everybody needs to go to the gym because it is not only overweight people that need to exercise. Since everybody eats, each person has extra calories which can only be gotten rid of through burning. Calories are burnt only when people do strenuous activities. With the kind of jobs that we have, not all of them need physical strength (Donnellan, 2003). People that work in offices, and shops that do not use much energy need physical exercise. Physical exercise is not only for the reduction of weight. It is for staying fit. Some people jog in the morning. That is also a form of physical exercise and can help a person to stay fit. However, the one thing I disagree with it as a form of exercise is the fact that it only exercises the legs. Yes, blood flow is improved and calories are burnt. But only one part of the body gets the most advantage. That is not right. The whole body should be exercised so that it can be strong. Otherwise, the advantage would fall only on one part.
There are a number of reasons why people visit the gym the number one reason of course, is to stay fit. However, some go to meet their buddies (gym buddies). Others go to relax, while others just go because of peer pressure. Whatever the reason, people still visit the gym. In the area where I stay, I see very many people rise up to jog in the morning. Some visit the gyms in the mornings before they go to work. Others on the other hand do it in the evenings after coming from work. Each person has his or her own time of visiting the gym. No matter what time one goes, the most important thing is that they exercise. Most people where I live are not overweight. In fact overweight individuals are a very small minority. Nevertheless, when it comes to going to the gym, each person goes. Everybody exercises in my community, from old to young. Families carry one another. Children go with their parents. Spouses go with each other. Thus, gyms are not just physical fitness centers. They also foster family bonds. Families support each other and spend time with each other. The kind of lifestyles lived by most people here demand too much time apart from love ones. Therefore, gyms time is a time when families can bond with each other, since love and appreciation can only be experienced when one spends time with a loved one, gym time helps in strengthening these relationships. This is another point to support my thesis. Not all people that go to the gym are overweight.
There are a lot of changes that I have observed in this community since people started going to the gym. One, many people stopped going to the hospitals. Before gyms were officially introduced here, people fell sick many times. Thus, the health advantages associated with the gym helped people. The fitness part, which is the most important part of going to the gym, has helped many individuals. Two, many people stopped becoming overweight. There were a number of overweight individuals in this community. A good example is my neighbor; who weighed over one hundred pounds. Nowadays he is but a shadow of his former self. He now has an athletic body to die for. This was brought about when he hit the gym. The wrong mentality associated with the gym is that when you start going to one, you become skinny after just a few days. This is not true. My neighbor worked hard for almost a year before he got the kind of body he now has. He also stopped eating fatty foods and take-away, which are unhealthy. He ended up being victorious for all his hard work. This is not to say that skinniness should be glorified in any way, it just goes to say that people should consider reducing their weight and eat healthy foods which are of benefit to their general well-being. Finally, three, families became stronger. The spouses that were used to arguing and not spending time with each other became closer since they began spending time with each other in gyms. Children who were not spending time with their parents because their parents were busy with work or another thing or to see and bond with their parents better. Therefore, this project has strengthened many families w. something that deserves applause of sort.
My thesis statement was; a gym is not only a place for overweight individuals. It is a place for everybody. Whether overweight or not, a person must visit the gym. Families go to the gym. This random observation proves the thesis. A gym is for people that want to stay fit, people that love their health and want the best for their bodies. A gym is a place for bonding with families and friends. A gym is the one place that people get to spend time doing something beneficial, yet have time for each other. Spouses bond in gyms. Children bond in gyms with their parents. Thus, the wrong notion that people who are overweight are the only ones that should go to the gym is unfounded. There is no evidence that supports this. It is just a misconception in the community. We may agree that obesity is a problem, and people that need to the gym most are obese people, but they are not the only ones who should go there. Everybody should go. Calories are in every person, not just obese people. In conclusion, I want to state categorically that not only overweight people should go to the gym. Everybody must. I have supported my argument by the fact that everybody needs to be healthy and family and friends need bonding. This is supported above by the points.
