Every organization that aims to remain successful must utilize different tactics in it days to day activities. One of the organization’s inherent responsibilities is to elevate the performance levels of employees to achieve the desired results. Many organizations usually draw upon established motivational principles and policies as well as ethics programs to realize their goals and objectives. This paper aims to explore one of America’s gets hospitality corporations, Marriott International, and its application of motivational principles in different areas such as growth, achievement as well as equity and satisfaction. In addition, the company’s ethics program including the code of ethics, training activities and monitoring and enforcement of the ethics program will be discussed.
Marriott International recognizes the importance and contribution of employees to the organization and this is one of aspects that has led to the success of the company. It is in appreciation of this precious company asset that Marriott International has developed and implemented a growth model that to a large degree employs motivation as one of its key contributors to success.
Growth through Motivation
Marriott International leads the pack when it comes to company and individual growth via job enrichment. Job enrichment refers to the process of designing jobs so a as to provide opportunities for employees to grow by giving them more responsibilities and control. Marriott International also offers management-training programs to its employees that equip them with skills and knowledge pertaining to effective and efficient managing. Classes that cover topics such as leadership qualities and technical skills enable its employees to perform their jobs more effectively. In terms of company growth, the company employs the ‘spirit to serve” philosophy”. This emanates from Marriott International conviction that people are the company’s most important asset and the company must therefore make it its duty to employ caring, and dependable associates who are both ethical and trustworthy. The other motivation technique employed by the company involves appealing to the society or the public via community involvement. By investing in this other crucial asset, the company gains recognition and support from both new and old customers.
Achievement
Every company that desires to promote growth via motivation can do so quite easily by recognizing, encouraging and rewarding achievement. Marriott International’ takes keen interest in its employee’s professional and personal achievement. One of the company’s programs that promote personal achievement is community involvement. In addition, the company also concerns itself with is employees achievement through continuous technical training as well as management training programs.
Equity and Satisfaction
As Marriott International’s employees continue to develop various job skills, they become more and more valuable to the company. At this point, the company must take steps to ensure that the employees stay loyal to the company. In many instances, an employee’s motivation to stick to a company or be loyal to it is hugely based on salaries and other related benefits. Others are the company’s interest and investment in the employee. Continued company’s investment and interest in the employees creates a desire within the Marriott International employee to be loyal to the company and this situation provides an equitable relationship for the employer and the employee. In addition, Marriott International’s belief that its employees are its greatest asset demonstrates that it hugely values its employees and this value instills to a significant degree some sense of satisfaction. Training programs are a demonstration to the employees that the company cares about their job satisfaction and this furthermore causes them to be loyal to the company. The skill development that employees gains from these training programs create satisfaction and loyalty, both in terms on their jobs and to the company as a whole. In simple terms, an employee who is motivated and who has job satisfaction tends to work hard to achieve company’s objectives.
Ethics
At Marriott International, maintaining its ethical values is of utmost importance. A company’s ethics, moral values, rules and beliefs establishes a suitable way for it together with its members to have effective dealings, both inside and outside the organization. Marriot International adheres to and consistently reviews its ethical program. The company’s reputation of employing highly caring and dependable associates who exhibit ethical and trust values enables it to maintain high excellence standards. The company’s commitment to good customer service together with valuable employee relationships is another way through which the ethical values of the company show.
Training
Marriott International’ offers consistent training and ethics advancement programs to its employees. This is mainly to reinforce the ethical values already instilled in the employees. The company also utilizes ethical mindfulness in its ethics training and this usually involves providing an enriched awareness to the employees that cause them to behave in consistently with ethical consciousness.
Monitoring and Enforcement
The monitoring and enforcement of ethical policies is a very crucial aspect particularly in regards to company growth. Marriott International utilizes hands a “hands-on management style”. The approach mentioned involves the management randomly walking around the operations premises to ensure that its employees are performing at the highest levels and to the best of their abilities. This is also done at sales points to let the customers know that the company management is accessible to them. However, in spite of this, ethical dilemmas are a constant occurrence in any company and Marriott International is no exception. Therefore, one of the ways through which the company enforces its ethical values is by establishing a set of consequences for employee’s unethical behavior.
