Performance-feedback is very important, whether it is at school or at workplace. Working for a big oil and gas company, it was that time of the year when the company’s HR would give a detailed feedback to the employees about their last one year’s performance and contribution to the company. This information and feedback was very important because it would determine the future of any employee in the organisation. It was more than a year since I had joined the company and it was my first job. Naturally, I was pretty tense about the feedback. On 02-January-2014, the company’s HR manager called me at his cubicle to have a one on one discussion about my performance. I was pretty tense and prospect of facing the company’s HR manager terrified me.
When I went to meet the manager, I was given an envelope which looked like my performance report. I opened the envelope to read the contents. It was written in bold “Based on you performance over the past 12 months, the company has given you a rating of 3.5 out of 5”. Apart from this there were parameters such as late ‘punctuality’, ‘enthusiasm at work place’, ‘skill –sets’ and ‘achievements’ on which I was rated on scale of 1 to 5. My average score stood at 3.5, getting maximum for enthusiasm and minimum for punctuality. I was told by HR manager that a score of 3.5 for a new -comer was good. He gave me a detailed feedback about my performance which was taken from my supervisors and immediate colleagues. I was told that the company saw a lot of potential in me, but there were some areas in which I needed to improve. They were the ability to take decisions after proper analysis, application of skills, to be more punctual at work and take fewer leaves. I was asked to sign my feedback paper and was given its copy. Considering my past circumstances, when I look at my feedback, I feel pretty satisfied and motivated. Last year was pretty tough for me as there was a tragedy in my family (death of my grandfather) and I fell sick with a severe stomach infection. These two incidents had impacted by work life and it was a challenging for me to give my 100% at work. But, in spite of those setbacks, I got an above-average performance report. I am now motivated to work harder and improve my performance as the company believes in my talent, capability and has high hopes with me. I will be punctual at workplace, will avoid taking hasty decisions and try to keep my supervisor and colleagues happy with my performance. I am determined to work hard and excel in my organisation.
