The development of internet technologies has led to revolutionary changes in the world. It helps people across the globe to keep connected regardless of linguistic differences and territorial barriers. This paper will share thoughts on the video titled ‘Mary Meeker: The Full Code Session’ that provides some vital information about internet trends in 2015.
Personal reflections
The video gives a clear understanding of how the usage of internet and mobile phones changed from 1995 to 2014. According to the report, when only 0.6% of the population (35 million) used internet in 1995, the volume of internet users represented 39% of the population (2.8 billion) in 2014. While analyzing the distribution of internet usage across the globe, it is identified that Asian market achieved a considerable growth over the period 1995-2014. Similarly, the percent of mobile phone users in the world increased from 1% in 1995 to 73% in 2014. When Apple was ranked second in terms of market capitalization in 1995, it attained the first rank by the end of 2014. In addition, some new internet giants like Google, Alibaba, Facebook, and Amazon emerged during this period (Meeker). The explosive growth of internet has had massive impacts on consumer markets as well as business sectors. In addition, significant improvements in the internet technology greatly contributed towards the development of numerous other sectors such as security, warfare, education, healthcare, government, and policy thinking. It is to be noted that the recent surge in the smartphone adoption played a significant role in increasing the internet usage worldwide. The fast developments in mobile, desktop/laptop, and smartphone technologies together with rapid growth in internet usage notably increased the average time spent by adult users with digital media in the United States (Meeker). Likewise, it is a well known fact that an unimaginable internet usage growth in the recent years greatly enhanced the scope of online marketing, which is turning out to be a powerful tool of modern marketing.
The growing popularity of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ also contributed towards increasing the usage rate of internet worldwide. Currently, internet is considered an important channel for facilitating business communications in the form of e-mails and video conferences as it is a secure and cost-effective communication channel. Today, an increasing percent of global population uses mobile messaging apps like WhatsApp and Messenger to keep in touch with each other constantly at affordable costs. Tech experts predict that coming years would witness notable advancements in messaging platforms considering the growing need cheap and secure communication. It is identified that user generated contents such as images, videos, and live gaming constituted the major internet trends in 2015. In addition, a considerable number of mobile users rely on mobile apps to obtain ‘just in time’ information such as driving navigation, breaking news, and public transit information (Meeker). It is important to note that rapid growth of internet technologies generated numerous opportunities in high-skilled and knowledge-based job markets. Finally, incredible developments in the e-commerce sector made it easy for people to manage their business transactions in a more convenient and cost-effective manner. Although fast growing use of internet technologies benefits the world in numerous ways, their scope is limited by severe cyber security problems. It appears that cyber security threats such as malware attacks and hacking make internet technologies vulnerable to exploitation by cyber criminals.
