As I aspire to be a prison officer, I utilized the opportunity to tour the men’s central jail in Raleigh, North Carolina. One important thing that I noticed throughout the tour was the safety and the security of the visitors. Most of the inmates were confined to their cells and the remaining inmates were allotted work in the kitchen, mess, garden, and laundry. The officers were quite professional, open-minded, disciplined, and performed their required duties to run the administration easily. These officers are called as the correction officers. The complete prison premise was well maintained, clean, and well organized.

The prison building is huge and consists of many floors that have various departments. I saw some visitors who initially went to the visiting center, and displayed their identity cards, and they had conformed to the dress code that had to be adhered to in the prison. The prison also has a medical center where the mentally ill inmates undergo treatment. This center has time limitations and visitors must visit the inmates in the stipulated time enforced by the medical staff.
I was glad to see that the prison also had implemented inmate correction programs that indulged the inmates in reverence services, Bible studies, spiritual discussions, professional classes in civil engineering and plumbing. Inmates also participated in self-help programs for anger management, building communication skills and programs related to ethics.
I was very impressed with the complete management and administration, and the working procedure followed in every department in the prison. If I get an opportunity to work in this prison I would learn a lot about the inmates who have been sentenced to 20 years or more for various crimes. Their criminal experiences will provide me good knowledge on the petty and the serious crimes that would build confidence and prepare me to face the criminals before I go out in the field for patrol.
