Shakespeare in the “Julius Caesar” play was much concerned about how individual lives. He provides an insight of the human’s life by raising the argument about the aptitude free will versus the power of fate in life. The playwright ultimately backs the philosophy in which freedom and fate have delicate coexistence. He uses characters such as Cassius, Caesar and Brutus to bring about the issue of the fate and free will. As Cassius and Brutus were attempting to eliminate Caesar from power, Caesar suggested “men at some time are masters of their fates: The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But ourselves that we are underlings” (I.ii.140–142. Although Cassius strongly suggested that man are drivers and determiners of their fate, as a strategy to influence conspirators to remove Caesar from power, there are some suggestion that he was wrong.
Shakespeare reveals prophecies and omens, which in the end are confirmed to be true. They also challenge the argument that an individual can utilize free will to determine their lives’ aftermaths. As the characters tries to answer questions regarding free will versus fate, the audience can already determine the future of the characters. Therefore, the playwright suggests that people do not have the power to determine what future holds for them, particularly using the free ill.
The play plays an important role in shaping up my life towards the direction of accomplishing success. For the success, one is required to maintain private self before attaining the public self. According to play, one has to develop conscious understanding of their feelings, thoughts interpersonal connections and actions. For instance, Brutus embraced more of public self than the private self and end up killing his best friend Caesar. He believed that by killing his friend, he was satisfying the will of the public since Caesar was considered as an imminent dictator. On the other hand, Caesar abandoned the private self and opted to follow public self that caused his death. He strongly believed that the power of his public self would provide protection for his private self. Therefore, to avoid misfortunes such as death and murder cases, it is significant to maintain a strong conscious through private self. This can help the individual to determine their purpose and apprehend their potential as a human being.
According to the “Julius Caesar” play, there is a need to interpret and read people and event, failure to do that may result to a downfall. The play covers a political scenario where some of the characters have failed to read and interpret the events and people, resulting to death and downfalls. For instance, Caesar was unable to read the intention of his best friend to influence his murder. Cassius’s death provides another result of misinterpretation. Pindarus made an erroneous conclusion about the capturing of Titinius by the enemies. He was actually being reunited with friendly forces. Consequently, this information resulted to death of Cassious as he seeks to save Titinius. While considering reading and interpreting events, it is important to stop trusting everybody, even the best friends. Cassius was aware that Brutus was trustworthy, and he would accept the forged letter that required him to join the conspiracy. What the playwright tries to teach the audience is to be more careful about their friendship and interpret people and event correctly.
The director portrays a great experience in directing the play. The actors expertly and straightforwardly managed the stage as they put their message across. The play offers a muscular strength and ferocity guaranteed to keep the public in the theatre in a sustained fight mode. The women that acted as men were composed to challenge the entire audience. Though it was not easy to understand the words, the acts reinforced their words by their acts. This made it easy to follow the play and get the cathartic cast of criminals. The fiery fluency of Julius Caesar makes the audience comprehend the words, as well as the intention between each word. The gray suits of the actors also help in conveying prison life.
Though the setting of the play is characterized by unique set and costumes, the director of the play cannot be blamed in the intrinsic problems faced in the Julius Caesar play. This is because the relationships of the characters do not come out in a clear and specific way. I have a feeling that the relationship between Caesar and Brutus never created the bond that the audience expected. Shakespeare as the play writer failed to favor the touted relationship of the characters. In most scenes, the audience notices the strength and ability of the director in the Lantern’s small cast, the sound, the lighting that continues makes them understand every bit especially in the battle section that are very confusing.
After critically analyzing the play production, I conclude that the characters objectives are clear and strong. There are those who use prose to explain their intentions in certain subjects. Despite the fact that it uses an underlying rhythmical sound, prose helps the characters to speak of topics connected to a low class. In the play, Brutus speaks in pose so that he could deliver the message to the audience coldly and logically. In the very same scene, Mark Anthony expresses himself in an impassioned and manipulative way to express the themes.
Outrageously, the live beat metal band, framework of female confinement and the emotional nuances heightens the themes of the play. All these are inherent in women playing men at their most susceptible. The directors choice to portray the message of the play through such means is unrealistic and a disgrace to the society. It catches the audience’s attention and provokes them emotionally not knowing that the characters are just acting. Such acts might make the audience lose their trust in incarceration facilities. Considerable, the mode used to portray the entire message is strange and mostly unacceptable.
However, considering the tension between the actors and the script given to them, one realizes that the entire production was intended to show how people strive to obtain freedom. In Act III where Cinna is mistaken for one of Caesar’s killers, the mob taunts him causing a scuffle on the stage. The scene stops shortly without psychologically preparing the audience for a trauma. I find this rather disgusting and unacceptable for such a play.
