Lawmakers in United States of America brought a bill in their federal government whose aim was to ban the junk food’s purchases using funds from Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program, NSAP. The bill raised many issues among the members calling for a mass debate. Some members opposed the bill while others supported it. The bill on one side directed Human Services and Health Department to seek from the government, a waiver that would ban the purchase of junk food while on the other hand; low-income individuals were provided with financial incentives to help them purchase more vegetables and fresh fruits.
Some members supported the bill saying that, the waiver requested would make them move a small step to the right destination. The bill necessitated an important talk with the government as far as the public health is concerned (Jon & Kelly). (Jon & Kelly) held that, the issue of hunger was not persistent hence there was no need of putting junk food on insecure families’ tables because the lobby on junk food in Washington D.C. has dictated that to be made. Finally, the supporters of the bill said that, the ban would help low income individuals make wise decisions and also fight the problem of obesity.
Democrats who were present in the legislature during the day when the bill was passed opposed it saying that, it targeted low-income individuals who were public benevolent. They considered this unfair. Also, they said that the bill has no future in an Assembly that is controlled democratically even though it has not yet been passed. They held on that, ban on junk food would not make people adopt any choices which are healthier and it does not matter whether someone uses his or her regular money or SNAP benefits, junk food will still be purchased. The bill had many disadvantages which were complimentary than advantages. Legislators had to frame it in a way that it would be helpful to all the people in the lower, middle and the upper class (Jon & Kelly).
