Report: To the University Management Council
The sustainable development initiative is an approach on various factors that concerns the well-being of the community in a sustainability perspective. The factors in question include, research, economic development, environmental conservation and education. (Freedman & Jaggi, 2010). The environmental conservation aspect is usually done and encouraged by various players in the society including government and nongovernmental organizations. The major aim of conservation is to avert serious implications that are brought about by imbalances in the ecosystem (Kahraman & Baig, 2010). In connection to this and as a wakeup call, I hereby write to your esteemed office to find it worthy your consideration to establish the above named initiative center. This is for the purpose of maintaining our ecosystem and to be part of the larger worldwide campaign that is aimed at achieving the seventh millennium goal of environmental sustainability.
In my own view, this centre should be used as an active point of creating awareness of environmental conservation to the students and the surrounding community. This can be done by launching educative seminars and shows to drive the main point home. Of great impact is the community awareness education that should be aimed at educating people of available safer ways of utilizing the environment in their day-to-day activities (Jo et al 1977). One major research and invention field that the center should specialize on as a part of broader spectrum of environmental sustainability campaign is on the side of energy. Energy has proved to be a chief driver of all human and economic activities. There is no sector that has not been relying on energy in its operation. In the pursuit of moving the world of commerce and other human activities, humanity has been known to use all kinds of sources of energy be they harmful to the environment or not. This approach of indifference towards environment has been too costly as it has proved to be the sole source of human woes that are there today. For instance, the ozone layer has been depleted making harmful rays to have their way into the human sphere of living. Cancerous chemicals have been used in both food production and other activities. The vegetation cover has not been spared either. All this have happened due to human effort of getting energy and raw materials for production.
The resources needed to set up the centre that this institution needs to provide is an office location with a highly trained staff that will aid the operation of the centre to be successful. Environmental education too needs to be provided in this centre. As part of reaching out to the community, this institution needs to encourage students to volunteer in community development activities so that the objective of the centre can be met.
The centre should embark on a program of designing various sources of renewable energy as well as energy saving components such as cookers. Renewable energy such as biogas, solar and wind energy should be one of the areas of study that the center should be involved in by championing for their exclusive adoption and as well as using the creative and innovative mind of the students to design such an invention or an innovation. Adoption of renewable energy has taken a center stage in the world’s top economic powers such as America, China, Germany and others. Therefore, establishment of the centre will be a called for action and a success due to the great emphasis of the environmental sustainability by major organizations and governments in the world (Daniella, 1995).
