Introduction
The managerial function of an organization starts from managing the operations in an effective manner, and then reflects it on the financial consequences of the companies accordingly. In a broad nutshell, leadership and management delivers some of the best results for the companies accordingly and effectively at the same time (Gamage & Pang, 2003).
There is a major difference found among the stance of leadership and management. Management is all about managing accordingly the employees accordingly and effectively, on the other hand leadership is all about leading from the front. In comparison, leadership is more effective as compared to management synergies particularly, and both of them are essential as far as managing the companies are concerned (Gamage & Pang, 2003). My personal viewpoint about leadership is very clear which is that it is a behavior through which a leader would lead accordingly and effectively in particular. In this assignment, it is required to pen down the personal inclination on a topic of leadership and management. There is an article associated with this assignment with the name of “Leadership that Gets Results” written by Daniel Goleman, who found different relationships accordingly. They found that these three things have a relationship with each other, which are
- The Elements of Emotional Intelligence
- Six Leadership Styles
- Organizational Climate
Analysis and Findings
- Concepts and their Influences
Daniel J Gloeman is an author and science journalist, and from last 12 years Daniel has been writing for the New York Times. Daniel specializes in psychology and brain sciences. Daniel wrote more than 10 books on different stance, and among them the name of leadership is one of them. Daniel found some strong relationship among the emotional intelligence, leadership styles and the outcomes of an organization (Mitchell & Casey, 2007).
Emotional Intelligence is an important aspect that analyzes the effectiveness of a company. It is used specifically for the management of ourselves with the fundamental capabilities. It is one of the most important aspects that associated with the long run productivity and level of efficacy of an organization in particular. There are four different elements that specifically comes under the umbrella of Emotional Intelligence, and these elements are as follows
- Self-Awareness: is the ability to read and understand the emotions as well as recognizing their impact on the work in particular.
- Self-Management: Self management is all about managing the work and working capability of a person, and its relationship with the leadership behavior
- Social Awareness: is the emotional intelligence part that associated with the awareness of the society and other important parts of the company, which will be used for further analysis.
- Social Skill: Is the steps or skills that will be used by the leaders and managers to manage their operations in an effective manner
Daniel found that all of these four elements of emotional intelligence are necessary for an individual, if they really wish to get a desired position in the life. Daniel has mentioned about different leadership styles in his book, and all of these leadership styles are essential and effective for the sake of an organization, as well as their employees. The six leadership styles which has been mentioned by Daniel in his book are as follows
- The Coercive Style
- The Afflictive Style
- The Democratic Style
- The Pacesetting Style
- The Coaching Style
Out of these six leadership styles, there are three leadership styles that found positive by Daniel due to their implementation, and according to Daniel, it is more than essential to apply these three positive styles on the companies for their positive economic and strategic growth particularly. Affiliative, Democratic and coaching are the styles which are positively, and they have a strong direct linkage with the emotional intelligence of a person.
Daniel found that Affiliative leadership style creates a set of harmony for the employees and builds strong emotional bonds with the workers of the company, which can be associated with the SELF Management emotional intelligence behavior of an individual. Self Management is all about managing the emotions of the self and managing them accordingly and effectively, therefore it can be applied over the affiliative leadership style in which emotional bonds would be taken into account accordingly.
Democratic leadership style is the most important and widely used leadership style and plan used by the leaders to enhance the productivity of their employees (Moyles, Georgeson & Payler, 2011). It is more towards taking timely and effective decision for the company by participating different players of the organization. It may include shareholders and employees as well. The skills that can be applied on this particular leadership style are Self Awareness and Social Skill. These two emotional intelligence elements are more towards analyzing the self behavior of the individual, and then applied it accordingly on the company. Democratic leadership style is all about getting a high participation from the employees and shareholders for the decision making stance of the company. The emotional skill of socializing can be extremely helpful in this particular stance, as a person who is highly social, then they may have chance to enhance their productivity through effective democratic style in particular. It is an effective sign from the viewpoint of the companies to have a democratic leader within their premises, as it will lead to increase their financial belongings, and the aspect has been defined by Daniel in the article. This thing has a direct linkage with the betterment of the overall organizational climate resultantly.
According to Daniel, Coaching is the third and last positive leadership behavior that can be found in a leader. Such leaders will develop people for the future of an organization, and they are the most productive type of leaders. Social Awareness is the emotional skill that can be relate with Coaching, as such leaders are sincere and believe in transferring of knowledge and information. This particular aspect will eventually increases the financial belongings of the company, and also gives a chance to them to improve their organizational culture in a perfect and organized manner, and this can be equally applied on the case mentioned by Daniel.
- Image Analysis
Every picture and diagram has something effective in it, and most of the time pictures tell everything. Most of the times, management only requires charts and diagrams to get the information regarding the financial and strategic health of a company, to take timely decisions (Moyles, Georgeson & Payler, 2011)
There is an image that found in the article of Daniel. It has a man with a big Golf Bag in the hand, which has multiple clubs in it. What was the idea of Daniel before putting this image in the article? What does it mean by multiple clubs?
The meaning of the same is simple, which is that leaders have numerous challenges and issues in front of their eyes, and management of an organization expected to resolve each and every issue considerably, however a leader wants to focus everything simultaneously. Daniel, showed a man in the picture with a single club in his hand, and left rest of the clubs in the golf box. The meaning behind the same strategy is that keep focus on a single issue at a single time, and do not get plunged in other problems until and unless the last problem would have been resolved. The image is a perfect example for many of the people who think that they are capable of handling many things at a single time, which is not at all possible. In this way they cannot even perform nor do a job better.
- Leadership and Emotional Style
This last section of the report depends upon the personal reflection, in which it is required to pen down personal leadership and emotional style. My primary leadership style is Democratic Leadership Style, because I am kind of person which always try to have a strong chit chat before taking any decision. I always prefer people to participate in the decision making process, because every person has its own mindset, and they can come up with effective suggestions and decisions in particular. I always want to stick with the same leadership style, as I am aware that it will be effective for my future consequences.
The leadership style which I will least preferred is Coercive Leadership style, in which the leader would have a punishment and coercive behavior for their employees that leave the employees unsatisfied and unmotivated as well. The impact of the democratic style on the organizational culture would be very effective and positive, as it will enhance the level of satisfaction and motivation among the employees and get the things in the favor of the company for their future concerns.
On the other hand the emotional style which I will prefer is Social Awareness, as it can be associated with the leadership style I select. Social Awareness is all about getting awareness with the current employee’s function and behavior, which will give a better idea to me to further strengthen my bonding with them. This particular thing will develop the areas further to me, and will also increase the room for me to be more effective and worthwhile in the future.
Conclusion
Managerial based functions are very important and significant for the sake of an organization, and it is equally beneficial for them to compete with the other organizations which are identical to their services and products. Entities have a single mantra in their mind which is to increase their economic prosperity with a positive node and effectiveness, and it can be accomplish accordingly. Leadership behavior and managerial behavior are important for the companies, and numerous authors have found effective relationship among leadership behavior and organizational productivity. This assignment revolves around the article presented by Daniel. It is found from the entire article that emotional intelligence and leadership behaviors are very important for the organizations in all over the world, and leaders who have such behaviors are worthwhile compared to other leaders.
