Nursing
The Mission Statement of the University clearly addresses the the standards, values, vision, and service goals of our nursing program. The goals are an ethical guideline to use as as nurses as well as during our time as students. I tried to apply the goals to my learning experiences as I reflected on the expericence. I always knew that positive interaction as a community requires good citizenship behaviour. Although, thinking about citizenship online was a new idea for me to consider, necessary because I could only reach my MSN by taking classes over the Internet.
Strickland, Adamson, McInally, Tittanen, and Metclafe 2012) carried out a qualitivative study about developing global citizenship online. Three nursing programs were involved in the project the USA, Finland and Scotland (Strickland, Adamson, McInally, Tittanen, & Metcalfe, 2012). The satisfaction levels reported by the data were high for the students in terms of their learning experiences (Strickland, Adamson, McInally, Tittanen, & Metcalfe, 2012).
Four areas were especially exciting for the students (Strickland, Adamson, McInally, Tittanen, & Metcalfe, 2012). They were satisfied with how they were able to learn with support from each other, while on the other had they were able to gain confidence when working on their own. The students also became more aware of the variety of challenges in the world for nurses. Also they understood how learning beyond the borders of their own experiences enriched their ability to relate well with their patients.
As modern nurses we need to be aware of other cultures and how to be ethical global citizens because people are moving around the world. In fact, R.J. Epstein and S.D. Epstein (2012) note that with digital medical records and internet; medical professionals are working on the levels of local and global at the same time. Even though I will probably always stay in one town, I will be seeing patients who are migrants, immigrants and from different cultures.
I agree with the nursing students from Finland, USA and Scotland. I like working with others in our unique community. By taking online classes I feel more confidant about dealing with my nursing work in the future because I am already profecient on the computer, plus I am open to learning about how to nurse my patients as well as possible, no matter where they may have been born.
