The discussion I had regarding the will
‘Prior to my grandfather’s death, he ensured that everything was smooth for his children. He clearly expressed what his end of life wishes were. There would be no life support at any single moment. This created a peaceful atmosphere to all who were concerned about him’. Having said that, I agreed with my family members that, in case I have a chronic illness, a fatal accident or any other condition that might lead to my untimely death in a short while, it would be advisable for them to ensure that the doctor handling me withholds any medical procedures that might prolong my dying time without stopping my pain or improving my condition. We agreed that this would be done in order to avoid any expenses and inconveniences given the fact such medical procedures are normally expensive. Further, apart from this, the medical bill will rise for the time I spent in hospital with not visible improvements to the time I eventually die. Upon these rationales, my family promised to uphold this declaration as my wish in case of the above-mentioned conditions.
The will
This is written to the medical center in which I may happen to be in, my clergyman, my doctor, my lawyer, my family and any other persons who might happen to be answerable and in charge of my welfare, affairs or health:
- I, the undersigned, (write your full names here) do comprehensively understand that just like birth, developmental growth, maturity and ultimate old age are a reality, death is also a reality. It is guaranteed that every person has to die at some point in their lives. In case my time comes at a moment when I, in my capacity, cannot make any decisions or participate in the making of decision about my future, let this avowal stand out as a decisive expression of my own desires at this moment when am still sound minded.
- In case I have a chronic illness, a fatal accident or any other condition that might lead to my untimely death, it is my wish that no life-sustaining processes and medical procedures be administered to me to prolong my life. In case it happens that am unable to make any decisions about my life, I hereby direct my personal doctor to stop, withdraw and withhold any medical procedures that prolong my dying moment. It is within my own discretion that this statement can be revoked.
This declaration has been made after prudent considerations and careful thinking. Thus, it is my hope that the above mentioned be legally and ethically bound to uphold the will’s mandate. I understand it is a difficult decision to make for me but; it is meant to relieve you of any constraints and expenses that might be incurred during the moments aforementioned.
