Why SMU
When I was in fifth grade, I wrote down what I wanted to be when I grew up. I always wanted to be an attorney, but at the time, I did not know how to make this happen. My mother was a single parent and we never knew where our next meal would come from. My own personal background has given me a greater appreciation for all that I have and the struggles I have been through to get to where I am today. I would like to use my legal education to give back to the community. I know SMU can provide me with the practical legal knowledge and skills I need to make a positive difference.
After carefully researching many top law schools, I have my eyes set on SMU. I am interested in the many clinical opportunities available to students, particularly the Civil Clinic. The Civil Clinic would allow me to gain hands-on legal experience working with clients and preparing real cases. But this is not the only reason that SMU is my top choice. I attended Black Student Association events and have met current SMU Law students and recent alumni. I have noticed one common theme among these people. They were all friendly, approachable, expressing a will to assist me in any way they could. And they meant what they said. A number of people have spent several hours with me answering all of my questions about SMU and law school, helped me get involved at SMU, and helped me prepare for the LSAT.
The warmth and eagerness that the SMU community showed towards me made me feel a part of something much bigger than myself. Helen Keller once said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” I am confident that together with SMU, I could work towards changing the world one day at a time.
