If food were to taste the same and cost the same, there would not be a thriving restaurant business. There would probably be a single restaurant serving the same menu day in and day out. The same would be true if human beings had similar tastes in food. In reality however human beings have varied taste and the human tongue can taste upto six flavors at one time. Food plays an important role in a person’s life but not everyone is able to cook or afford good restaurants and it is in these situations that places like Mcdonalds and Ruby Tuesday come in handy. Although Mcdonald’s and Ruby Tuesday are different in terms of their menu, decor and service, they share some similarities too.
McDonalds and Ruby Tuesday are both places for people who have less time on their hands and limited money to spare. The waiting time for your order to be placed on your table is lesser than in normal restaurants and a meal for one does not really burn a hole in the pocket. Although there is an attempt to serve healthy food in the form of salads, these are not places for people who are worried about their calorie intake and their waistline. Another similarity that these two places share is that they are not ‘fancy’ places where you would take your date to. These are at best functional places-you pay for what you eat and you more or less get your money’s worth. Another similarity between the two places is that they have television sets inside their premises that advertise their products. If they have a promotion or something new on the menu, it is on the TV and it is hard to miss. These are also places where you can drop in to catch a match that would be missed either due to work or because you are on the road. Sitting for hours munching on a salad also would not invite repeated glances from the waiters unless it is rush hour and they need the tables desperately. Unlike specialized restaurants that rely on word of mouth or reviews to advertise, Mcdonalds and Ruby tuesday rely on mass advertising. Their adverts on TV and newspapers along with coupons are sure to assault anyone who watched TV or reads a newspaper everyday. In sum, if you live in a big enough town or city and are connected there is no way you can miss the advertisements for these places. They both offer a variety of dishes and is a place that is good to take your family and kids to. Kids are welcome and are also given balloons, crayons and paper to draw and keep themselves occupied. Both places also have a kid’s menu and there are items on both the menu’s that are quite similar such as fried chicken, burgers, bacon, salads, soda and juices. The two places have the advantage of being situated in perfect locations. Mcdonalds can be found near university campuses where students short on money and teachers short on time could drop in for a quick bite or a takeaway. Ruby Tuesday also caters to its customer base by having outlets in residential areas, near the mountains or hospitals where people could have a good dinner without having to splurge too much . These are also places where people can be loud without getting any awkward glances from those seated on the nearby tables.
The similarities however end here. Mcdonalds is a fast food chain that has thousands of outlets all over the world while Ruby Tuesday is a dine-in restaurant that is for casual dining and numbers about 850 restaurants across the world. You can walk into a McDonalds in the morning and can be assured of a breakfast (as long as you pay) but Ruby Tuesday does not offer breakfast. They have a lunch and a dinner menu. Ruby Tuesday offers a pick up service for their customers where they could call from home and com later to pick it up. This saves the customers their waiting time. McDonalds on the other hand has the drive-in option. You place your order in one side and it waits for you as you reach the other side of the fast food joint. The opening hours of the two places are also different. While Ruby Tuesday opens from 11 am to 10 pm on weekdays and stays open till 11 pm on the weekends, McDonalds in many places are open for 24 hours. This makes it a much preferable option, especially for students who work late into the night. The service is also quite different in both the places. Since it is a fast food joint, McDonalds offers its customers self-service. Instead of being seated in a table and waiting for the waiters to come take your order, you go to the counter, select what you want, pay for the food, grab your tray and then head to the table after collecting the silverware (or plastic ware). You also clean up when you leave, throwing the leftovers and cartons in the garbage bin and placing the tray in another table. In Ruby Tuesday however, you get the feeling of being in a restaurant without burning a hole in your pocket. You walk in, state the number of people in your party, let the person there lead you to the table. You place the order for your drinks and have time to choose what you want to eat while the waiter brings in your drink. The waiter checks on you now and then, asking you if you need a refill, more food or dessert. He or she also brings in the bill after you have done eating and you tip them. Tipping is something you can get away with when you are in McDonalds. Since it is a dine-in restaurant Ruby Tuesday can serve alcohol. something that is not available in McDonalds. You only have a choice of sodas, milkshakes and juices in McDonalds. The menu although they have one or two similar items are different with different prices. You can choose between American, Italian and seafood in Ruby Tuesday while you are limited in choices when you go to McDonalds. McDonalds is all about American fast food, deep fried, tasty and unhealthy while in Ruby Tuesday there are options for a healthier meal option. The price of a meal for one is understandably low in McDonalds when compared to Ruby Tuesday because of the menu as well as the services it offers. The decor too is completely different in the two places. There are cozy tables in Ruby Tuesday with classic lighting while the decor in McDonalds is bright, flashy and loud. Ruby Tuesday is a place for the occasional date when you are low on money, a place to host birthday parties and a place where you can have huge family gatherings. These however are quite rare in McDonalds. You go to McDonalds for fast, cheap food and nothing more. Both are in good locations but McDonalds just has more outlets . There are two McDonalds in Pocatello and Chubbuck while there is only one Ruby Tuesday in Pocatello. Ruby Tuesday offers a discount of 20% if you are staying in a hotel close by but McDonalds offers no such discounts.
McDonalds and Ruby Tuesday are two of my favorite places in Pocatello and they are my favorites for completely different reasons. Fast Food is what comes to mind when I think of McDonalds and a relaxed dinner is what comes to mind when I think of Ruby Tuesday.
