First and foremost, it is important to note that the relationship of Rita and her son is a loving one. Although there maybe some medical issues looming over their heads, the connection that they share with each other, perhaps even affected by the absence of the father, is something that is treasured by both. Rita’s son, who is 15 years of age, knows the situation of her mother and cares for her dearly. He knows what it takes to be living with a mother with bipolar disorder and he knows well how to manage the situation. This could be further noted on the way he reacted on how his mother insisted that he does not need any more tests and should be given antibiotic. This behavior shows how responsible the young child is amidst his age.
Since Rita’s current condition makes her specifically prone to mood changes and sometimes even bad temper, it could be understood that her sudden change of attitude during the check up could be contributed by the fact that she is frustrated over the matter. Football was something that she thinks she and her son need to at least set a balance in their lives. Considerably, not being able to play in the game might jeopardize such balance, which in result puts Rita in such a bad mood. She simply wanted the situation to be over and for her son to be able to play in the game within the next five days.
Her son, knowing what the situation is and understanding the need for the tests, seemingly agrees to the diagnosis process. He shows such agreement in a non-verbal approach. Signaling with the use of the eyes specifically saying that he would be coming back to take the tests and undergo the necessary diagnostic procedures show that he is interested in actually getting better. Although this is the case, he understands too that his mother simply wants to be over with everything.
Weighing the value of health and measuring the responsibility and attitude of the child [who is the main patient in this case], it is considerably acceptable to view the child [15 years of age] to be capable of handling himself and deciding for what is good for him especially when it comes to his health. The condition of his mother makes her in a relative position to make decisions for her son. This means that there are instances when her opinion on the matter being dealt with at hand might not be valid nor helpful. Nevertheless, telling her this or showing her directly about her mistakes might aggravate her emotions and cause larger problems.
Since the mother wants antibiotics and is itching to get out of the clinic, the medication or the medical document for it could be given. However, considering that she herself forgets her medication, she might also be able to forget giving her son these medicines when they get home. When the son comes back for further check up, it is best to treat him like an adult, to help him through the process and give him good options towards getting better and being able to play in the games in the next five days. Considering him to be a responsible individual who has the capacity to decide for himself and care for himself, in this case, he could be given the attention he needs and have him undergo tests even without the consent of his mother which could be further imposed by the distinct demise in her attitude and behavior towards the matter.
