The information I learnt from the lecture and the psychology chapter was very interesting with detailed writing concerning the memory and its operational process. There are various aspects regarding the working of the memory that are very helpful to me because they have helped me in deciphering the manner in which the brain deals with information. For instance, one important bit is the stage memory model that consists of three major stages. This model lured my attention greatly because I was able to comprehend the transition of information from the visual organs into the brain system.
The fact that information obtained from a person’s surrounding travels to the sensory memory, which is the first level of the memory process enables me to relate to my reading capacity. This is because if information does not transit from this initial level to the next, it may be lost. This explicates how one may study a certain topic in school and end up forgetting it after a short while. In addition, the same applies to the second level known as the working memory. If the information shifted to this level is not put into practice then it will also evaporate too.
This illustrates the essentiality of re-reading what a student learns in school in order to increase one’s remembering capacity especially during tests and other major examinations. This aspect also leads me into understanding the reason behind teachers providing their students with practical assignments from time to time especially in scientific subjects. It boosts the working memory’s capability of retrieving information when necessary. However, despite the fact that the short term memory is very useful to human beings it information holding capacity is not very large because it has a certain limit. This information posed a lot of importance to me since I am able to appreciate the use of examinations and frequent reading in order to boost my memory’s capacity. Moreover, I can coordinate and organize my studies more systematically because I understand the stages and processes of the memory model.
