I am aware that the new trends and impending changes in healthcare scenario demand nurses to be versatile professionals. Nurses today should have fine knowledge, technical proficiency, communication skills, dedication, and leadership qualities to excel in their career. Since healthcare has become a potential industry, only a flexible and open minded person can cope up with the changing situations in health care services today.
I have been always open to the values and beliefs of the patients put under my care. As a nursing practitioner, I always tried to perceive the need of my patients instead of imposing my own beliefs on them. I tried to understand their cultural development on their own terms rather than inflicting my own moral values and ideas on them.
I believe I am a good communicator, and I find this quality will facilitate effective nursing. Effective communication is vital to build a trusting relationship with the patients. I usually explain to my patients what I am doing, what the plan is, and allow them to express themselves too. This will make them feel that I respect and genuinely care about them. Effective communication with the patient will keep them at the center of their health issues, and this will lead to better results. My communication skill has always helped me to maintain good relationship with the interdisciplinary team and fellow nurses. For instance, I can easily convey patients’ needs to the team only because I collaborate with the team and my patients well. I am sure that communicating with fellow nurses will alleviate work strain.
I believe that the leader should be conversant with the visions and goals of his team. A good leader knows how to accomplish the goal by utilizing the available resources. In this regard, a leader should be a good manager too, a person who manages his resources properly. The characteristics of a leader vary depending on situations. However, a leader should have a vibrant personality. The leader should be bold enough to make strict decisions on time. Knowledge in the concerned field is definitely a prerequisite, and I believe that I can be a model to my peers in this regard. I strongly believe that I have some exceptional qualities ranging from managerial, interpersonal, decisional, informational, and technical skills, all which collectively constitute my personality.
I have had long experience throughout multiple branches of nursing career, all which contributed to my positive development. I have been always successful in my academic pursuit. I was awarded the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation scholarship, which provided a wonderful mentor experience for me. Another honor was that I was the only student to earn the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing Student award in my senior year.
With regard to my involvement in outreach programs, I am active in the health ministry of my church educating the community on important screenings like pap tests and prostate checks. I believe these achievements and qualities contribute to my uniqueness and make me a potential candidate for this new scholarship program. Obviously, my academic and career experiences have equipped me to take on the curriculum the scholarship program entails. I will take up this opportunity to share my academic and nursing experiences with my fellow students.
