Introduction
Meteorology is a study concerned with atmospheric phenomena. The study entails an array of other different fields which include chemistry, physics, and dynamics of the atmosphere. It further encompasses a number of the effects the atmosphere creates upon the surface of the earth, oceans, and life. Meteorology is considered to be one of the oldest observational sciences in the human history and probably the most relevant discipline to a broad segment of the society (Holton, 2014).
History of Meteorology
Karoly Tamassy, as an amateur meteorologist carried out the first instrumental observation in the city between the periods of 1854 and 1869. The observatory of Tamassy was positioned near the center of Debrecen for future meteorological experiments (Holton, 2014). The observations he made were later sent to the Weather Center in Vienna, -where he got the instructions for the measurements. The original weather register is found in the archives of Hungarian Weather Service.
Tools used by meteorologists in predicting weather
Thermometer-This tool gives the current ambient air temperature- giving information on how cold or hot the weather is.
Barometer -This is used to indicate air pressure.
Weather satellites –Provides pictures of weather systems from so many miles away in the space.
Mathematical requirement for a degree in the field of meteorology
A disciplinary program in the Departments of Physics, Mathematics and Geography is designed to equip the students with knowledge in careers aligned to the field of atmospheric physics, climatology and meteorology. These disciplinary programs emphasize on the mathematical composition of the three subjects as follows dependent with the institution. Generally, a course in the field of meteorology would require at least 76 points in geography, 80 points in physics and 81 points in physics.
Salaries earned by meteorologists in the United States
An Entry-Level average meteorologist in the United States is expected to earn around $44K per annum. On the other hand, the median income salary for a U.S. Meteorologist approximately takes home $51K per year. They are also eligible for potential bonuses peaking to $10K and profit sharing of $43K (United States, 2015). Therefore, the total cash payment to Meteorologist at the lower end would be given $31K or meets it peak of $103K dependent on someone’s performance.
Employment opportunities for meteorologist in U.S.
The U.S. employment outlook for the atmospheric scientists was projected to experience a 9% growth from 2014 to 2024, probably at a faster rate than the average for all the occupations (United States, 2015). Meteorologists will have a better job prospect primarily from the private industry.
