‘The Patriot’ is a movie based on the American revolutionary war of 1776. The movie circles around the life of Benjamin Martin, a single parent of seven children. He is a man with strong military training and a sharp character. He is very keen, and a true patriot of the country. He had a very bad experience of the previous war that he had been a part of. Still, with his struggles, he manages to care a lot about his children. The movie was loosely based on the real happenings of American Revolution war against the British in 1776. Especially, the cities of Boston, New York and Philadelphia. The war to become free and independent from all the governmental connections is the limelight of the plot. The film ascertains that it is based on the real life stories of a few American soldiers of the revolution era. A few of the war soldiers are namely, Francis Marion, Andrew Pickens, Daniel Morgan, and Thomas Sumter. However, major part of the story is fictional.
The film describes the life and actions of Benjamin Martin. He is not in the favor of an unnecessary war. So he refuses to take any part in the war and votes against it in the elections. However, against his ideas, his elder son, aggressively joins the army in the continental group. The home and family of Benjamin fall under grave danger when the British troops burns his house and harms his loved ones. He forcefully and unwillingly takes up the weapons and guides a group of militia against the British. After a lot of sacrifices and damages, he manages to wound the British army very effectively. He slashes the resources of the British army with his targeted attacks. His last fight was against the General Charles Cornwallis, who was a stubborn commander of British army. He and his army plays a great part in conquering the British army in the battle of South Carolina. He succeeds in rebuilding the independent country.
Even though, the film was in comparatively modern time of year 2000, the depiction of the 17th century and the environmental authenticity of that period is amazingly rich in the movie. The fact that the movie was in year 2000 doesn’t affect the pasteurization of the American Revolution. The fight scenes of the movie are very realistic and authentic. Starting from the costumes till the angles of each camera, the movie is a result of beautiful and visionary cinematography. The creativity of Roland Emmerich is boundless.
There were some remarkable efforts of the creators to stick to the facts, but the movie plot lacks the actuality in most of the historical parts. The actual war scenario and the actions of the patriots are very extensive and lackluster. To energize the visuals and the story, the essence of the truth is in a cocktail with the fiction. The commercial agenda of the producers overpowers the creative agendas of the director in some of the plot flaws of the movie. Apart from the historical inaccuracy, the movie is a great mixture of dedicated acting, stunning visuals and swift direction.
The film gives a few insights about the historical events of the American Revolution. The emotional aspects of the patriots are one aspect of this movie that gives a great intuition. Some of the facts about the southern revolution war are very informative and inspiring. In a movie that has the story based on historical events and characters, the details of every small thing matters a lot. Especially, the accuracy of the information and its presentation. The presentation has to be entertaining enough to hold the audience for two hours. ‘The Patriot’ has a unique blend of accuracy with entertainment. That is the main reason why this movie is one of the great movies of all time.
