In writing the research paper on “How Globalization Affects Culture Today” I began to understand the processes that are necessary to become a good writer. Being somewhat unfamiliar with the subject matter I had to not only study what was being taught in the class but to also perform research relative to modern culture and its association with globalization. Good writing involves learning how to think through the process from the beginning to the end (Lamb, 1999). While this seems like a simple process, it became clear to me when I began to read what I had written and it was not as clear as I wanted it to be. It was at that point that I began to think first and then write.
Another consideration was to learn how to perform research for the paper. I am learning that it is most important to ensure that I understand how to look for resources to include books, journals, and other articles. This information can be found in the library or online; however, when looking for information online it is best to review that information to ensure that it meets academic requirements (University of Wisconsin, 2016).
I believe that my strengths as a writer include the fact that I know that I have much to learn. It is sometimes difficult for me to get started and to stay focused on the topic. As an example of this process, when writing the research paper, I had to constantly focus on the research problem which was the identification of the effect of globalization on culture today and then ensure that I covered all of the required information.
At this point I see my weaknesses as a writer which include not being as clear as I need to be when writing, needing to take a lot of time even when writing a short paper, and having problems creating a strong close when I write about something. To become clearer in writing I need to figure out what I am writing about and make notes about what I want to say. This will help me to be focused and not waste so much time when writing.
Having a strong close when writing may involve my having to focus more on what I am writing about. Maybe thinking about the subject matter from an open mind may help me to make the writing process easier assisting me in writing a better article, research paper, or essay.
I have improved in the writing process because at least at this point I understand my strengths and weaknesses and know that the only way for me to get better is to practice writing. This will take time but I am willing to practice in order to get better. No matter the chosen profession, there is a need to learn how to write and to do so professionally. This is the reason that I know that I must practice as I want to be successful in whatever job I choose to take.
