I imagine that one new friend I will make during the Summers Programs for High School Students will be from China. She will be from a city, such as Beijing or Shanghai, but maybe also from a smaller city such as Qingdao or Dalian. I think being raised in the city, her life will have not been much different from mine in terms of cultural and entertainment. In other words, while our music, movie, and fashion tastes might be different, we both have plenty of access to the pop cultures of our respective homes. I also think that she will be quite internet savvy. While I do not think she will have a Facebook or Twitter account, I think she most likely will have a WeChat or Weibo account. In fact, like me, she probably spends a good amount of time on social media.
As the only child, I think perhaps that she will be the focus of her parent’s life. Perhaps they sacrificed much to allow her to get a good education. Perhaps also they put a more than a normal amount of pressure on her to do well. However, I am sure that she is a good student; one of the top in her class. Her school life is probably not much different from my own. That is to say that her school life is her job. I would guess that she probably has not met many people who are not Chinese. Perhaps one of her teachers in from another country but it is more than likely that I and the other students in the program will be her first international friends.
I think that she will be interested either the College Prep courses or a courses from the Business and Economics Department, such as “Communicating with Consumers: The Basics of Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations”. She will want to take these course because on the one hand, her parents probably want her to attend a university in the United States, such as Columbia. On the other hand, if she does not go to university, the business and economic courses will provide her with usable skills to find a job in China’s booming business environment. This will be especially relevant since she would have taken the courses in New York City, America’s business center.
What I would learn from her is that China is not as mysterious as people that do not live there think it is. I will learn that young Chinese people are not really that much different from myself or other youth from other countries. I would also learn that how China sees and understands the world and China’s place in the world is deeply influenced by the culture, especially the political culture of the nation. Indeed, I would learn that perhaps the largest difference between the China and other nations is the degree to which culture influences behavior and actions.
What I hope she will learn from me is that diversity, whether it is physical, mental, or spiritual, is an aspect of life that is worthwhile to experience and promote. I hope that I can teach her that diversity allows one to broaden one’s horizons in the hope in increasing mutual understanding and trust.
