For my field trip I decided to go to a “Night Club.” This experience is new to me because I have never seen a Night Club from the inside before. I did hear a lot of things about night clubs and those things that I heard made me curious about them. From I heard from fiends and from some the research I did in the internet, I learned that that people get drunk, dance, and then “make out” if they want to, in other words, night clubs are venues to have a one night stand or to find an intimate but short time relationship with other people. I also heard that the majority of the people that go there a male and that the women who go there are usually the “liberated” types – those who hold unconventional views about gender and sexuality. They usually do not hold on to the traditional norms about women. So I chose this type of field to confirm such gossips about night clubs. I went alone, as I also love the thrill of doing things for the first time, by myself.
I made this decision - to go to a night club – hoping that I will learn how women deviate from the traditional norm of the society. I hoped to talked to one of the women there and have a casual conversation about her perspectives in life and what motivates her to go to night clubs. Such knowledge will help me understand the sentiments that women keep in a patriarchal society – a society dominated by men. In other words, I want to have firsthand information on what women think about night clubs and why they go there. I was thinking that perhaps, nightclubs are perceived by women as venues to become free and be equal with men in terms of wanting and experiencing sexual relationships. It is a long standing traditional norm that women ought to stay at home, do home chores, be under the authority of men, and obey their commands. I want to know if the women in the night club have the same perception about the role of women in the society.
I should point out that before I went to the night club, I thought that the women there are a lot liberated, that they could be considered immoral based from the traditional societal norms. They are deviant to the tradition. Nevertheless, I also think that there is wisdom for their actions – for going to night clubs. I thought that going to night clubs is their way of objecting to the cruel and restrictive traditional norms of the society, in other words, it is a form of their rebellion to the patriarchal system that has long been upheld by the society without question. Although, I was also thinking that they are the exceptions among women. They somehow want a different life but they do not necessarily dislike or hate the traditional norm. Regardless of what they want to do with their lives or their perspective about what women should be doing, I feel deep respect to them. I myself understand how hard it is to do things in accordance to norms and not with ones freedom of choice. There are instances in my life that I had to do what other people think I should do, and the feeling is not pleasant, so I feel deep respect to all the women no matter what profession or what they want to do with their life, as long as their actions do not infringe on the rights of other people.
As I was experiencing the night club life, I felt like it was the most alienating thing that happened to me, I do not know what to do. I sat on a table, alone. There was no one talking to me for about five minutes, and then to my surprise a beautiful woman came to me and offered me a drink. She gave me a smile and asked my name and what was I doing in the night club. I explained to him that I chose to go there for my field trip assignment at school. She laughed at me and exclaimed that it must be pretty shocking for me because it was my first time. I answered that it was indeed shocking to see women with all their beautiful but few dresses on. We had a good conversation. To admit the truth, I was not comfortable talking to her, I think she was a little drank – she made sense, though. I was also uncomfortable with all the people there, they are all drinking and music was so loud. I, nevertheless, find the woman I was talking interesting. She gave me very interesting insights about her views about gender and the sexuality. She confided to me that she was a lesbian. She told me that she never feels sexual intimacy with men, but with other women. She then posed a question to me about the norm of the society about women like her. The society thinks that sexuality, sexual preference, is something that you can choose. For her, these things are arbitrary and we cannot choose them. This is a fact, according to her, that the society and tradition failed to consider. She also told me that the reason she goes to the night club was primarily to find another person like her. She told me, that while the night club is not really a nice place to meet and become intimate with someone of the same gender, the society forces people to do so. The society will not accept such relationship in the “open.” So the people who are under such circumstances need to hide it and do it on secret places. I later found out that she was a successful woman, owning a small business. She spend her own money and she is independent. When she told me about these things; I felt compassion for her and the people like her. I thought to myself, if only these people are accepted into the society just like heterosexual people, they would become more productive members of the society. I feel that the traditional society is killing itself by being insensitive to change and facts of life. The traditional society is too blind to see afar of. Perhaps many would disagree with me, but this is what I was feeling she talked to me. For me she was perfect in every way – perhaps even better than heterosexuals, yet she cannot express herself more freely, all because of some norms about women and gender, in general. She is a like a seed that is left unplanted that we cannot fully see how great a tree it could be.
I have learned a lot from this experience; hence, I would also recommend people to visit some places at least at one point in their life for the purpose of understanding other people. It is better that we understand why people behave contrary from tradition. I think, before we judge people, we first learn their respective perspectives. I think if more and more people will do the same as I did, then more understanding rather than judgment will be done. This will make this world a better place.
All in all, I learned from this experience that we cannot really generalize on people whether they are good or bad once they do things that are contrary to the traditional norm of the society. Sometimes, such divergence is signs that the norms need to be changed for the society to improve. Also, my interview with the woman I met ad the night club changed my judgment of the women who go to such places. Going to night clubs is not really about fulfilling the desires of the flesh, it is about looking for a venue to express the suppressed part of ourselves and finding a friend who could relate to us well.
