1. Identify 5 important relationships in your life, and discuss why you 'conduct' them (what reasons). Give an example of a person/group in life which fulfills one or more of these reasons.
Five important relationships in my life are as follows: (1) staying in touch with family members to affirm the familial bond, as well as to sustain love and support for each other; (2) staying in touch with close friends to relate, to influence, and to play; (3) staying connected with a romantic partner to learn, to influence, to help and to play; (4) affirming connections in school, especially to faculty members and to the administrative support to learn and to relate; and finally, (5) being acquainted with community members to learn and to influence. An example of a person who fulfills one or more of the reasons for engaging in interpersonal relationship is evident through the romantic relationship with a partner where each day is spent to learn new things from sharing of experiences; where influencing is constantly exchanged as one or both partners propose to try new things; and where there is a need to be supportive and at the same time, provide opportunities to play, to rest, and to spend recreational activities with.
2. Honestly, what do you do competently regarding IPC, and what would you improve? In other words, what are your strengths and weaknesses as an interpersonal communicator?
I am competent in IPC through being culturally adept and aware of diversities in people. As such, I am more sensitive to distinct needs, communication patterns, and adherence to beliefs. My strengths include cultural awareness and understanding of different verbal and non-verbal modes of communication. This strengths enables me to gain a greater understanding of people from various walks of life. On the other hand, there is still some weakness in terms of developing mindfulness, especially in terms of reliance on first impressions, and some tendencies for stereotyping. After being aware of interpersonal competence, one could work to improve these weaknesses and become a more competent interpersonal communicator.
