NETW206: Introduction to Switching
Network equipment
There is equipment that will be needed in the network. There will be the need to have routers in the network. The routers will help connect the different networks in the network. The router will be used to connect the two networks that are to be merged. The router will be configured with the network setting s of the two organizations. There will also be the need to ensure that the two networks operate in their respective subnets. The subnets will be integrated to the network. The router that has been used in the nursing school will need to be replaced with a router that has three interfaces. This will enable the router to connect to DeVry’s network and the nursing school network. It will also be possible to connect to other sub-networks in the nursing school (Sun et al., 2010).
There will also be switches in the network. There will be the need to have a fixed port switch in the nursing school that will connect the 24 computers and the servers in the school. The network switches in the DeVry network will remain the same because there are no new computers that are being added to the network.
There will also be the need to have network cables that will connect the new devices to the network. There is need to connect the nursing school network to the server of the DevRy campus network. There will be the need to have network cables that will be used to connect the new nursing school network. There will also be network cables that will be used to connect to the four surveillance cameras that will be added to the network. They will have to be connected to the main network so that they are able to collect the required data in the network.
Network requirements
There will be the need to have subnets in the network which will be used differentiate and identify the hosts in the two networks. This will mean that the networks will have different addressing schemes to differentiate the hoists and components of the network.
Another network requirement is that the different departments will be identified through VLANs. This means there will be the need to have VLAN setup. The ports of the switches will be configured to represent different VLANs in the network.
Cost-benefit method of connecting the two networks
The two networks will be connected using VLAN. This is because it is a cheaper method compared to using VPN setup. What the administrator will have to do is to configure the network into VLANs and classify each VLAN according to the subnet that will be created. This is cheaper that having to pay for the leased lines. The two networks will have to be merged together but with logical segmentation between the different segments in the network. The network will make use of virtual local area network in the new design (Sun et al., 2010).
VLAN set up
There will be a need to set up virtual LAN in the new network. This is a simpler way of merging the two networks instead of using other technologies like VPN.
The nursing school will utilize the ports it has for the different network needs of the school. One network device that is to be included in the nursing school network is a router which has four ports. One of the ports will serve the connection between the school VLAN and the main VLAN connection with the main campus.
Each of the ports of the router will be connected to each link to a VLAN in the network. There will be one switch connecting to the router. This means that the different VLAN s in the networks will have their switches which will connect to the entire network. Each interface will be connected to the VLAN interface connecting to the router. The router will have four ports which will have interconnectivity to the respective VLAN (Huang, & Wang, 2013).
There will be the configuration of the ports of the switches to have the different VLANs in the network. One switch will be located in the school of nursing and another one will be located in DeVry campus network.
Linking - The ports will be connected using trunk ports. This is where the two switches in the network will be connected together using a trunk. The trunk has the capability to interconnect different VLANs in the two networks. The trunk will enable the two networks have different logical interconnections.
VLAN identification – each subnet will be identified with the use of subnets. There will be the set up of subnets that will be used to identify different segments of the network. This means that there will be different subnets. In the network requirements, there will be four VLANs and four subnets. Assuming that the network IP is 192.168.10.0, this means that for 4 subnets, the addressing scheme will be 192.168.10.0/26. This will mean that the different VLANS will have a different addressing scheme.
