Background:
Nola Pender is a past professor who worked at the nursing school at University of Michigan. She has a very successful nursing career. The Health Promotion Model theory was developed by her in 1982 and many research projects were conducted in her honor. Significantly, it has been used worldwide as a guide for evidence based practice, research and education.
Theory description
Concepts: This theory has four major concepts. They pertain to it being a complementary counterpart to other health protection promotion models in the industry. Second, Health promotion being defined a process whereby people are empowered to make decisions regarding amidst determinants of health with the goal of improving the quality of their health.
Third, health promotion means that people interact from an individual level uniquely in within their specific environment. Consequently, interactions with the environment produce either great health outcomes or poor ones. Eventually, their health status aligns with prevailing circumstances in their physical and social environment.
Fourth, the model considers the from the perspective of their physical characteristics and social experiences. It is believed that behavior affect cognition and health realities. Therefore, an analysis based on these concepts ought to be made when designing health promotion measures for individuals and families.
Metaparadigm
Nursing metaparadigms consider four distinct aspects of health promotion which are related to Nola Pender’s health promotion theory. They are:-
- The human being which is related to Nola Pender’s individual concept
Humans are open entities containing energy and unique experiences
- The environment, which is almost identical to Nola Pender’s environment concept. The environment produces experiences to which the human becomes aligned overtime.(The college of New Jersey ,2014)
- Health. This in the metaparadigm relates to a dynamic process of either wellness or illness. Nola Pender’s health promotion model clarifies this through strategic interventions.
- Nursing practice relates to specific interventions such as health promotion measures (The college of New Jersey ,2014).
Clarity
This theory is clearly addresses the important aspect of human life in the physical as well as social environment.
