Personal Nursing Philosophy
Personal Nursing Philosophy
First and foremost, my name is.. My home is in West Palm Beach, Florida. Nursing is my passion and I find it very enjoyable to help other people on matters pertaining to their health. I started my nursing career several years ago and along the way I have learnt a lot about the profession. Therefore, there is much I can say about my experience as well as the profession itself.
The nursing profession is not only about helping patients, but it also augments one’s personal development. In most instances, the profession calls for kindness, respect, and humanity, which are some of the core principles and values of the profession. I have learned the significance of these values while practising practically as a nurse. My experiences have become the drivers of my profession (TCNJ, 2014). I once met a patient who was suffering from an unknown illness. Unfortunately, the patient was often confused and did not recall her family whatsoever, but strangely she recalled her name. Due to her deteriorating condition, it was difficult for me to complete her physical assessment and concentrate on her personal needs. The patient fell asleep several times; therefore, I was forced to wake her up so as to continue with the assessment. I had never worked with a person with such a condition before, and therefore I did not know the best approach in that circumstance. However, I was able to sail through the physical assessment of the patient (TCNJ, 2014).
I decided to pursue nursing as my profession as I rightly believe that the aspiration to help people through the profession is more of a calling than anything else and I felt the urge to help those in need. Nursing is a decent profession, and should not be taken only as a job to earn a living. My mission is to offer open-minded care to people in need irrespective of race, religious affiliations, and disabilities and so on. My philosophy is that nursing professionals have a role to deliver a safe, all-inclusive and patient-centred health care. I will always acknowledge my patients as people that need and deserve personalized attention as well as health care (TCNJ, 2014).
Nursing professionals should always employ clinical judgments to ensure that the needs of a patient are met. As health promoters, nurses should inspire patients by permitting them to become operational partners in their own care. Nursing professionals should always ensure that patient information is kept confidential unless they are required by law to disclose such information. It is also advisable to educate the public on the diseases that affect them, treatments as well as healthful behaviours. Moreover, nurses should practice healthy behaviours in their own lives as they are expected to offer better healthcare to others. They should, therefore, care for themselves first (Parker, 2010).
My current professional role is to make use of knowledge and skills to offer good health care to patients under the direction of my instructor. My behaviour is expected to always replicate the values of our health care organization. Factors that guide decision making are competence and self-confidence. Others include the organization structure, the nursing education among others. These are essential factors that control decision-making in nursing (Parker, 2010).
The Four Concepts of the Nursing Meta-paradigm
Human Beings
Human beings are considered to be open energy fields with distinct life capabilities and experiences. Being energy fields means that they are superior to and different from the sum of their fragments that make them and cannot be forecasted from knowledge of these fragments. Human beings, as complete beings, are distinct, dynamic, emotional, and multidimensional. They also have the capacity to reason creatively and abstractly. In the application of the human beings concept in nursing, biological and intellectual dimensions are defined due to the fact that they affect health as well as behaviour. Other dimensions of the human beings that are defined include psychological, biological as well as the socio-cultural dimensions. All these dimensions affect human behaviour and health. Beneficiaries of the nursing services are considered to be either ill or well. The beneficiaries include individuals, families and the society (NCBI, 2014). This concept was employed in the nursing profession to determine the relationship between illness and the psychological, biological, social and cultural situation of a patient. For instance, there has been found to be a connection between diseases affecting people and their culture.
Environment
Environment refers to the scenery or the geography of the human beings social experience and the context of the experience in normal life. It includes deviations in time, space as well as quality. The concept of environment encompasses the societal beliefs, traditions, expectations inter alia. The concept is used in nursing in a manner that allows patients to experience visual beauty, caring relations, lived health experiences and so on. It is used in combination with the concept of human beings. Dimensions considered to affect health include but not limited to physical, cultural and developmental processes (NCBI, 2014). This concept was employed in the nursing profession to ensure that the conditions surrounding the patient under nursing care are good and friendly to the patient. When the conditions are good or encouraging, there is a possibility for better results.
Health
Health is a dynamic process and is the fusion of illness and wellness. The concept is defined by the opinion of the patient in his/her entire life. This perspective concentrates on the whole nature of the patient in social, physical, visual as well as ethical areas. Health is circumstantial and relational. In the application of the concept of health in nursing, wellness is considered to be the similarities between a person’s realities and possibilities and is defined on the basis of caring and the sensation that one is being cared for. Illness is described as the experience of loss. This can be arbitrated by caring relations (NCBI, 2014). This concept is employed in the nursing profession to help define the expected results for the health of a patient.
Nursing Practice
Nursing is an academic field as well as a practice profession. The field involves a combination of art and science of all-inclusive health care controlled by values of human beings freedom, choices and accountability. The nursing science is a body of knowledge established via theory advancement and research. Logical analyses have also contributed to the growth of the science of nursing. In the application of the nursing concept, critical thinking and decisions are employed in providing evidence-based care to patients. This is done to accomplish an ideal level of patients’ wellness in varying nursing contexts. This concept is used to define the scope of the nursing profession. That is, the concept defines the role of the nursing profession (Bahramnezhad & Shiri, 2015).
Two Nursing-Specific Concepts
Examples of nursing-specific concepts are the human beings and the nursing practice. The concept of human beings involves the needs, completeness, customs, behaviours, and growth of the persons. Humans are described as open energy fields with inimitable life experiences. The energy fields are superior to the individual parts that make up human beings. Additionally, it is not possible to predict the behaviour of humans on the basis of these parts. The nursing practice concept involves processes like leadership, research, learning, collaboration and so on. Approaches used in the nursing practice include but not limited to reconciliation, empowerment, advocacy, justice, service and among others (Masters, 2010).
Propositions
• If perceptual precision is present in the interaction between a patient and a nurse, transaction will happen.
• If a transaction takes place between the patient and the nurse, objectives will be accomplished.
• If objectives are accomplished, there will be satisfaction.
• If objectives are accomplished, effectual nursing care will take place.
• If transactions take place between the nurse and the client, there will be improvement in growth and development (Whetsell, et.al, 2009).
In conclusion, the nursing profession entails helping those who are seeking medication as well as enhancing personal development of the nurses themselves. Kindness, respect and humanity are prerequisites for a good healthcare. Personally, I have had a lot of extraordinary experiences with patients that have helped me in enhancing my profession. I believe in a nursing profession that delivers secure, all-embracing, and patient-centred healthcare. Nursing concepts includes human beings, environment, nursing and health. The four concepts are interrelated.
