“Sorry. We Don’t Take Obamacare.” The growing pains of the Heath Care Act are frustrating patients. What does the church think about it?
Healthcare reform was one of the top priorities of the Obama presidential campaign of 2008. His particular attention to social needs in the sphere literally led him to the White House. However, many, if not the majority, are disappointed with the program and its requirements. People do not get enough of the benefits or are not subjected to them at all. Despite all criticism that Obamacare and Medicaid had come up with, the programs are implemented and effective in the US. However, the Catholic Church does not support them.
The main idea is that the Affordable Care Act and the Church differ in their view on abortions and sterilizations. The Church insists on a pro-life position that calls people to value life and avoid activities that may put lives in danger. The Obamacare regulation was opposed by the bishops because it drafted “the contraception-sterilization-abortifacient regulation” and legally backed such activities (Jeffrey, 2015). Moreover, Catholic claims against these and other provisions of the Act seem to be neglected. As Elizabeth Dias writes, “Dozens of lawsuits challenging the Affordable Care Act, many from Catholic organizations, are not going away, even after this Supreme Court case is decided” (2015).
In addition, Catholic Bishops came up with the alternative for Obamacare. They call for protection of human life “from the bureaucratic, coercive, and secular healthcare culture” promoted by the Affordable Care Act (Harper, 2015). They voted for the endorsement of Christ Medicus Foundation CURO that is aimed to meet the needs of the neediest people in the society as well as strengthen faith and morality in human relationships. Therefore, the Church seems to be disappointed at the values and ideas promoted by secularists in the healthcare field.
