Coach Boone’s Tough Approach on the Team
Coach Boone’s strategy to handle the situation at T.C Williams Football team was right. Many people can argue that it was a tough approach on the team, but it was the best way to handle the situation to enable the team achieves its mission. The team that comprised of people from different races was not united as expected because of the racial issues that existed between the team members. However, due to the “toughness” of Coach Boone, the team was united, and they were inspired to follow their mission as a team. Additionally, his approach to dealing with the team members made the players have more confidence and thus perform even better.
Coach Boone adopted different techniques of leadership to overcome the racial prejudice that was evident among the players. Racial prejudice is being defined as unbiased negative perception toward a person or team or social group. To overcome the situation coach Boone adopted a transformational leadership style. According to Tracy (2014), transformational leadership style refers to a process that aims to transforms individuals. Coach Boone’s leadership style changed the attitude of the team members greatly, and thus they were able to get along with each other well.
The leadership style of Coach Boone’s was appropriate to the situation at T.C. William football team. However, to be more effective as a leader, Coach Boone should also have listened to the views of other team members. An effective leader should be one that listen and respect views from the people he/she leads (Schermerhorn, 2005). If Coach Boone could have been a good listener, then the other team members could not view him as a dictator.
