In the first case study about ‘Senior Management office location’, I would recommend that organizations adopt open door policy to enable interaction among all staff. The open door policy promotes exposure of senior management to other employees. For an open door policy to be successful, a guideline needs to be put in place to enable solving of problems at any level in the organization. The open door policy follows that the employees will first try to solve their problems with their immediate supervisors. The senior management should allow all the employees to gain access to them. They should then make decisions the moment they know the reason behind the employee’s visit.
There are various issues that make employees seek audience with the senior management. Some of the reasons include, not being able to cope with their supervisors, the company issues, market conditions, and the employees’ wants and needs. These issues pose challenges to the senior management especially if it concerns disagreements with the employees’ supervisors. The senior management should give the supervisor the chance of solving the problem first. If the supervisor is not involved, the organization may become dysfunctional. The manager needs to ask the employee whether they have tried addressing the problem with their supervisor. If that is not the case, they should be advised to try that out first. In case the employee says that he or she finds it difficult to talk to the supervisor, the senior management should bring both the supervisor and the employee together and try to evaluate the situation. All kinds of conflicts should be addressed to avoid having bad relationships at the workplace.
In the second case study about ‘Nadia’s stomachache’, I attribute her health problem to the stress level at the workplace. Nadia needs the job because she is divorced and her children depend on her. If the workplace was well organized and the pressure not too much, Nadia would be comfortable working at Deer’s Departmental Store and she would be more productive. Nadia is a qualified and active employee and this is what earned her the job at Deer. The stomachache is caused by a lot of anxiety and the feeling that she could lose her job if she does not follow the company’s policy. The constant headaches are caused by a high level of stress owing to the pressure of work at the workplace. Every workplace has some level of stress, but a lot of stress can harm a person physically, emotionally or both. Each employee has a duty to himself or herself to ensure the management of stress. Some of the workplace stressors include: indecision, lack of time, changes, lack of information, too many tasks, lacking control, worries about the future and relationship problems.
The company can get rid of stress from its supervisors by making sure that the duties and roles of the supervisors are well defined, communicating to the supervisors about their job security, enabling supervisors to participate in decision making, offering rewards, recognizing good performance, enabling the supervisors to develop their careers, ensuring that there is no harassment at the workplace and making sure that the actions of the management are at par with the values of the organizations. Nadia can cope with the workplace stress levels through adopting some stress management strategies. Some of these strategies include: communicating effectively and being responsible. Effective communication will help Nadia to improve her relationship with the management and other employees. Being responsible will help Nadia improve herself emotionally and physically.
