I visited the Al Ahdy Orphanage (Cairo, Egypt) on June 13th, 2016. That was my first visit to the orphanage, and on the night before it I could barely sleep. I was worried, afraid of being late, and I did not know what exactly I was expected to do there, how to do it, whether the children will accept me, and so on. After all, it was necessary to find a common language with the kids. It was very exciting and scary.
My friend Mohamed Zidan, who is a famous professional football player, joined me during this visit. When we got to the orphanage, the children greeted us with smiles; they were so happy that we arrived! We all started to hug; I and my friend were so pleased to be so warmly welcomed. Children were especially happy and excited to meet Mohamed Zidan; this could be seen in their eyes sparkling with interest, joy and enthusiasm. I felt very relieved at that moment since I expected to see the unfortunate and sad faces of the children; instead, I saw happy, normal kids. After all the kids at the orphanage do not differ from those who walk in my neighborhood. They simply have no parents, and they are forced to live in an orphanage. I felt extremely sorry for all these children who have no family and therefore are forced to live and spend all their time in an orphanage.
One of the basic stereotypes associated with orphanages is that the children there evil, greedy, stupid, sick, aggressive. To be honest, I was also very afraid of this. But all fears vanished when I saw the little faces pressed against the windows, and eyes burning with curiosity. They were waiting for us! From that moment a new life that was filled not only with the thoughts about myself began for me. The realization that someone needs you, gives you enormous power. Children from orphanages are not a faceless mass isolated from society; they are the same kids who are now running around near your house, sitting at the desk in the coolest private school, roar with laughter in the circus, only with a sad and serious look. They had to experience significantly more difficulties, troubles and sad moments than many of us have to go through during the entire life. However, they are children who need someone to be interested in them, and to love them.
It is often said that for a person to feel happy, it is necessary to hug somebody no less than six times a day. Children in orphanages are missing many different things: equipment, clothing, hygiene products, toys and so on. But most of all they are missing the human warmth. When people visit orphanages, they often bring children toys, clothes, sweets; but all these things are not as important as one main thing – we bring your desire to become their friends.
The day passed quickly, we played many sports with them, held competitions, played darts, and football (with Mohamed Zidan, of course); we even tried drawing some pictures. The visit ended by the traditional tea-drinking with the kids, and we went back home.
On this visit, I started to value and appreciate my life and my entire family – especially my parents and all other relatives too – much more than I did before. Besides, I found myself thinking that, instead of suffering because of our pressing problems, it is better to come to an orphanage and spend time with children, with those who need it! And children first of all need attention. After this visit, I decided that I would go to orphanages from time to time and share with children my warm and pleasant emotions. In my opinion, this world would be a much better place if all people would do their best to help those in need.
