Iago hates Othello because Othello received the promotion that was supported to be for Iago. Feeling disgusted over Othello’s promotion that he referred him to be “one Michael Cassio” because it is the job that is fitting for him and to be as Iago’s military lieutenant. Iago feels that he is more qualified than Cassio because the experience of Iago experience is on the battlefield where the real action takes place. Iago cannot contain his jealousy over his non-promotion because he believes that he possesses all qualities and skills suitable for the coveted position. However, the real reason for the intention of Iago to destroy Othello is not because he hated him, but only a ploy in order to manipulate Roderigo. Iago believes that if he showed the same resentment against Othello, he will be able to influence Roderigo to be the one to seek vengeance against Othello. Rodrigo is envious of Othello for marrying Desdemona, who was once the apple of the eye of Rodrigo.
In Act 1, the quote that will represent Iago’s hatred towards Othello can be seen when he said “One Michael Cassio, a Florentine, who never even set a squadron in the field and does not know the division of a battle was the one who promoted. In fact, Cassio is even helpless as a spinster who lacks experience and only relies on bookish theories. He will only be a fool in the battlefield and merely prattle for lack of practice and skills that a true soldier must possess. Thus, he must only be my lieutenant”.
