Does war has differing effects among the affected? Is social justice guaranteed to those affected as a result of war? I decided to involve my father to find out how the family was affected by the Second World War to get the answers. “We thank God for the peace that we experience now as a family,” my father began. “Your grandfather was a veteran. He really suffered considering the success of the nation against his safety,” he added. “What triggered the war and what made my grandfather get involved in the war?” I asked.
“Your grandfather was a military officer, who loved peace and harmony in his country. In collaboration with the United States Government, our country was peaceful with law and order, which were highly controlled by the military. Due to the peace and economic stability of the state, the United States was not anxious towards joining the Second World War, which had claimed the lives of many fighters in Europe and Germany. However, during the war, the Japanese attacked our troops and thus the United States joined the war. Your father, who was a military officer, was sent to the fields to give orders and ensure success in the war. However, he passed on while on duty even before his first born, your elder uncle, was ten years old.”
Justice and Violence
“Since the family was still young, your grandmother went to claim for your grandfather’s pension money to help her to pay the bills as well as our school fees. However, her requests were declined and we were forced to move out of the secured military houses. Due to her persistence, she was put to jail and succumbed to death as a result of pneumonia. We were hence forced to work at an early age to provide for our younger brother. However, in one of the demonstrations campaigning towards the assistance of the fallen soldiers’ families, he was killed. Due to frustrations and lack of money, we ended up dropping out of school and became casual employees in various industries.”
It can be concluded that the current generation is still affected by the war through its social status. Since our parents dropped out of school to do a casual job, the family income has been so low to sustain our bills and education. Therefore, we have considered taking huge amounts of loans to cater for our fees, which most probably will affect our children in the future.
