Question 1
My intended major is mathematical economics. As a child, it was intriguing to see that some successful people made predictions about potential risks in the economy, and the predictions came true. This sparked my interest in mathematics and economics. I came to learn that Mathematics plays a significant role in economics; a role that has been increasing in importance as the years go by. Consequently, I have come to appreciate the fact that Mathematics is progressively important in regard to the expression as well as communication of concepts in economics. Today, activity in financial markets is generally governed by mathematical models. My interest in both Mathematics and Economics was further ignited through the challenges that were presented to me in middle school and high school. Throughout my time at school, I always enjoyed Mathematics as a subject. My high school education has fostered my understanding of and passion for the subject, and offered a variety of new concepts. Mathematics modules have constantly challenged my way of thinking, and showed me concise applications for my mathematical knowledge.
I have extensive work experience from which I have gathered a number of valuable skills and knowledge. I have worked as a volunteer in my uncle's company. Through this experience, I learnt a lot about economics and the way in which it applies to our everyday lives. Additionally, I was able to appreciate the fact that Economics is relevant to all businesses, whether it is a large international corporation or a small-scale business. Although my Uncle’s company was a small enterprise, economic principles such as inflation, and the forces of supply and demand always had an impact on his business. I have also worked as a volunteer math teacher for primary school students. I enjoyed the interactions with students and it was exciting to share my knowledge with them. Overall, teaching mathematics was a rewarding experience for me.
In 2008, my family and I went through a very challenging time. We were hard hit by the financial downturn. My father got an investment failure and he lost a substantial amount of money. This situation was mainly caused by my father’s failure to monitor the financial market as well as lack of adequate research before he made a decision to invest. The difficulties that we went through as a result of this failed investment made me realize the importance of understanding the risks of investment. I became concerned about the economics of my country and the world. I also began making savings and thinking about investments that I could make in the future so that I could be independent and financially stable. Subsequently, I decided to pursue economics. I intend to use the skills that I will gain to advice people so that they do not make the same mistakes that my father made.
Question 2
I am a highly analytical, knowledgeable, and reliable individual. I have an in-depth understanding of principles, methods, and procedures of solving mathematical problems. While in school, I had a strict daily schedule. I trained my maths skills on a regular basis, submitted solutions for maths reviews and attended maths competitions. Through this commitment, I was able to develop my strength in problem solving and my comprehension of mathematical concepts. In middle school and primary school, I won the third prize of a Mathematical Olympiad competition. Additionally, I was a Mathematics representative of my class for three consecutive years. I am passionate about mathematics; every time I solve a math problem I get a sense of accomplishment.
While working as volunteer maths teacher, I pride myself in the fact that I helped my students develop a love for mathematics and taught them effective methods of solving particular problems. When I began teaching, many of my students did not have much interest in the subject, and they performed poorly. By the time I left, every student in my class had a very positive attitude towards maths and their performances had improved significantly. This further demonstrated my ability to inspire other people, to work with people from diverse backgrounds and to be patient when I am required to. All my working experiences have helped me to develop evaluative skills, confidence, and the ability of trying diverse approaches to general problem solving. Furthermore, I gained important skills of co-operation and team work.
I enjoy reading articles in the Financial Times as well as the Economist. As a result, I have been able to develop my knowledge of current affairs and events in the financial world. I believe that I am very knowledgeable about the economic issues in many parts of the world. Knowledge plays a significant role in the economy. My extensive knowledge together with the knowledge that I will gain in my undergraduate studies will certainly enable me to make important contributions to my country’s economy.
I look forward to the opportunity of advancing my knowledge and skills at University of California, while I develop my current interests to the best of my ability. I am certain that my passion for Economics, my love and mastery of Mathematics, along with my dedication and diligence will make me successful at graduate level and beyond.
