I have selected the evolutionary psychology perspective to explain human behavior, including my own behavior. Most of our behavior develop when we encounter certain situations that affect survival. These adaptation mechanisms evolve through natural selection. Only people who exhibit the behavioral patterns that enable survival are selected to the subsequent generations, and with them, their psychological mechanism is also selected. According to the evolutionary psychology theory, the brain can be compared to a computer that receives information from the internal and external environment and generates an output behavior that enables survival in the environment. The cognitive programming of the brain enables adaptation. When this behavioral adaptation goes awry, it results in psychological problems.
I could apply evolutionary psychology behavior to explain my behavior and thinking as well. Growing up, I was a vegetarian, and we never cooked or ate meat in our family. But, when I moved abroad, I found it difficult to maintain a vegan diet, as the only affordable vegetable was corn. My health was failing and incidentally, a friend brought me a chicken soup when I was ill. I did not know it was a chicken soup, but after drinking it, I liked the taste. When I later learned that it was a chicken soup, I felt surprised that I liked it. From then, meat has become a regular part of my diet. People learn from experience and day to day event. We choose behaviors that promote survival. Only a small percentage of the population, adopt a behavior that is contrary to once survival.
Conclusion: Most of the behavioral changes experienced during growth and development can be explained in terms of evolutionary psychology. The modern environment may pose challenges to certain behavioral patterns that are genetically inherited. But with time, only behaviors that help to adapt and succeed in these challenges, survive.
