The poem can be associated with the theme of death. She writes, “Parting is all we know of heaven and all we need of hell”. Death is an integral part of every human being, and it brings pain to those left behind. The theme of isolation can also be identified. The author talks about her life being shut in and isolated. The author uses the words “my life closed twice before its close” in the very first line. Pain and courage are also themes in the poem. The author has suffered so much pain that she considers herself already dead. However, she is still physically alive and may have to face another tragedy.
