The state of nature is a fascinating concept that argues for the presence of human life before the inception of civilization and society. In contemplating the state of nature, it is necessary to ask how human beings learned to gather and organize themselves into societies, why they did so, and what was different about life for humanity before this period. Human beings, in a state of nature, would likely be similar to animals in that they would behave largely according to their instincts and not their sense of kinship towards their fellow man. Men in a state of nature would be more than willing to fight with one another over resources, food, survival, and more, giving no quarter to anyone in their quest to have the best life.
Judging the state of nature from a political perspective, I would argue that libertarianism probably utilizes the state of nature in the most intriguing and accurate way. Libertarianism places the highest priority on liberty and freedom above all else, and consequently would behave most closely to the state of nature in their deeds and positions. Libertarians believe the state of nature is a good thing, and that elements of government and regulation seek to impose unfair boundaries on people to enact their destiny and secure their own peace and security as individuals. Men in the state of nature owe nothing to any other man because of the lack of civilized order, which is a society that libertarians may find appealing.
However, I personally believe that human nature is inherently social, and that in order to allow ourselves to enact our destinies, we must seek and solicit the help of others to achieve common goals that benefit everyone. To that end, I firmly believe that democracy supports the true state of human nature; while everyone deserves freedom and peace, it should not come at the expense of everyone else’s.
