The first case study is about Johnny T, who is originally from Thailand, but manages to set up and operate a successful Thai restaurant in Southwestern city. Initially, as a foreign investor, discrimination and competition are among the challenges that Johnny had to face, which he manages successfully. However, his main problem emerges following the shooting that takes place in state in the northeast. This is a case of how the social media can negatively affect and even threaten the very existence of small businesses. Following some negative comments on the shooting incident and two other follow-up comments by Johnny that were not well received by the people, the business is facing a major threat. For small businesses, it is hard to dissociate the business with the owner, which is the main problem that the Johnny’s comments have caused his business. Evidently, any PR efforts to save the company should focus on restoring the image of Johnny, monitoring his personal comments and usage of social media, and using the same media (social media) to save the business.
The second case study is about a crisis facing TriQuinn Oil and Gas, which is a family owned business with the potential of expanding to become a global player. Reagan Quinn is the CEO and one of the brothers, others being Alex and Jay Quinn. The company buys Oceans Tanker Co., with a clear knowledge by Jay Quinn, the lawyer, of the potential danger the freight might cause. In the event of the accident involving Williams Oil’s tanker driven by Carl Miller, a new and inexperienced foreman, there is a major threat to the business if it is revealed that the company bought a company with faulty machinery. The image of the company is at risk. It might be time for Jay Quinn to come clean about what he knows, and use the help of a PR in saving the image of the company, before an investigation possibly points the blame to the newly acquired machinery. This would cause a serious media frenzy, which the company should prepare for and use the help of PR experts to counter.
