General education comprises educational foundation skills, habits, values, and knowledge that prepare students for success in their course and professional lives after graduation. As a result, general education plays a crucial and important role in the lives of students (David, 2015). General education is often founded on the understanding that students will live and work in changing and unpredictable environments. As a result of the variability of employment and careers as well as various unforeseen directions associated with personal development, general education builds capacity in students that need competencies that are transferable across disciplines (David, 2015). Therefore, it enhances students’ ability to develop their mathematical and communication skills, stimulates their capacity for creative and critical thinking, and enhances their knowledge of the cultural, social, and natural contexts in which they work and live. Through general education, students develop skills in English, communication, math, social science, and humanise, among others (David, 2015). Moreover, general education plays a crucial role in developing the student’s capacity to be a responsible, informed, and responsive citizen. Subsequently, a general education course provides a strong foundation on which learners can develop awareness of the relevant moral, intellectual, social, and aesthetic aspects of their lives (David, 2015).
I learned various elements from the literature, philosophy, and communication courses. In the philosophy course, I learnt to think critically, creatively, and with clarity. Furthermore, I learnt how to take logical approaches to addressing and evaluating challenging issues. From the communications course, I learnt how to write professional letters as well as how to write convincing statements, which are free of grammatical and stylistic errors. Finally, from the literature course, I learnt how to evaluate and criticise various elements of literal pieces. Specifically, I learnt that topic sentences should be able to read as independent paragraphs that are meaningful.
