Education provides vast opportunities of to a person. It helps to improve as a professional, develop certain skills that are needed in order to find a high-paid job. However, in order to achieve academic success in college, one should have certain characteristics.
In my opinion, one of the most important traits of a successful student is alacrity to work hard and willingness to acquire and analyze new information and learn new skills. One cannot succeed in college, if he or she is not prepared to put a lot of effort into the studies and only thinks of entertainment. The students that spend their time at parties and consider the membership in ‘Greek letter organizations” as the best and the most important part of the student life, often are not able to find enough time for studies, which should be the key reason why one decides to enroll in college. The most successful students are hardworking and concentrated on studies and determined to do their best. This leads us to the following question: how they manage to be immune to the temptations and distractions that life on campus provides profusely.
The answer lies in a self-discipline and self-control that good students surely possess. Ability to prioritize and put studies first represents one of the features that distinguish goal-oriented students from the slackers. Self-discipline is the very trait that helps a person to achieve long-term goals. While slackers procrastinate and become distracted from working on an assignment or reading a textbook, disciplined students organize their time effectively and follow once established schedule. In this way, they are able to prepare for lectures properly and do not have to cram all the study materials the night before a test.
When talking about the qualities that a good student should possess, it is important not to confuse students that have a good memory and simply memorize information easily and those who understands concepts and can critically assess arguments. It is not unusual to see a student who passes a test only because he or she crammed course readings or another student’s notes and memorized all the formulas, dates or concepts without a clear understanding what they really mean or how to apply them into practice. However, knowledge acquired in this way is unlikely to make its way in a long-term memory. Once a test is finished, a student tends to forget everything that was learned in one night. On the other hand, the ability to understand theoretical concepts and how they can be employed in everyday life makes knowledge to stick in the memory. Therefore, critical thinking and the ability to recognize similar patterns is the factor that turns a good student into a successful student with great prospect of bright future and professional growth.
I want to conclude my essay with the brilliant quote of the famous cinematographer Conrad Hall, “You are always a student, never a master. You have to keep moving forward”. In my opinion, it clearly highlights the significance of long life education and curiosity. Qualities that define a good student are the same that define a good professional, as both seek to acquire new knowledge, learn new skills and develop themselves. They can never satisfy their hunger for knowledge and they seek perfection even though they realize they will never be able to achieve it. Like a horizon, it is always ahead.
