Differences among Psychiatric, Spiritual and Recreational Uses of Drugs
First of all it should be said, that drugs are used for different purposes. Psychiatric drugs treat mental illnesses, such as depressions, anxiety, some eating disorders, psychosis, bipolar disorder, insomnia and many others. A psychiatrist, a GP or a nurse prescribe these drugs. The medication-taking period depends on the diagnosis and symptoms ("Medication | Mind, the Mental Health Charity - Help for Mental Health Problems" n.p.). Some people use drugs as a means of getting spiritual experience and this use is called the spiritual use of drugs. Under the spiritual experience they see different things they cannot experience in the real world, for example the ability to talk to different imaginary creatures that exist in people’s minds (Pavlina, n.p.). Others use recreational drugs to take pleasure in every step, they make. Most people use recreational drugs simply because their friends use them too, or they try it under the pressure of peers ("Recreational Drugs. What Are Recreational Drugs? Advice | Patient"). Thus, only psychiatric drugs are used for medical reasons. While spiritual and recreational drugs are used with the purpose of either to get some unreal spiritual experience or for pleasure.
Psychedelic Effect of Music and Lyrics
Music can have psychedelic effect on listeners, as a rule, when it employs different special effects, for example marching, the discharge of rifles, multi-tracking, overdubbing and others. The psychedelic era began with the movements for civil rights, and coincides in time with the legalization of some drugs, anti-war protests and other issues that refer to the youth subculture. Thus, rock song lyrics often discussed these issues and had an enormous psychedelic effect on listeners. By the way, the Beatles are known to be among the first to evoke psychedelic effect with their music and lyrics ("PSYCHEDELIA" n.p.).
