The fact that there are numerous definitions of leadership and neither can stand on its own proves that leadership is a complex subject. In essence, leadership is about instilling confidence in people. Furthermore, it is the “we” thing that requires both the leader and the subordinate. Furthermore, it is the willingness to take the blame. Also, leadership is about acting so that others will want to follow. It unbelievable that even today we are still trying to figure out who a leader is and what leadership entails. Sadly, even the three most recent theories; situational, transformational, and strength-based leadership have also been found to have weaknesses. I think that leadership is a complex subject because we all have traits of leadership and we want to define it according to our point of view.
I agree with you that leadership is a broad word and can mean different things to different people. It is thoughtful of you to say that the reason that we have so many definitions of the term leadership is that we want to learn how to be better, how to teach leadership skills to others and to put a job description to it. Additionally, it is true to say that any leader would be proud when they see a sense of direction in their subordinates as it would prove that he or she communicated his vision and mission effectively. Being an excellent and efficient leader starts with having the right group of people first. Your post is incredible.
It is true that now and then people do away with one theory of leadership and search for another that tries to nail down what leadership entails. Pinning down the word leadership is not possible because we all experience leadership in a unique way, and at one point we are leading or being led. I like the fact that you also think we all have leadership qualities and desires because even the less competent will want to advise the professionals in the field. It is my belief that in most circumstances, subordinates want to be told what to do as it inspires confidence and a sense of direction. However, leaders should remember to be in charge rather than in control. I think you are an observant person.
