Implementation Plan:
Now that the nature of various solutions has been established, through programs like the boys and girls club and after school at the teacher(s), these solutions need to be talked about in greater detail in order to have a successful outcome. Childhood obesity is not an easy subject to tackle, so the methods used to achieve good results should be both evidence based, and what practically works for a specific group of children.
There are two possible primary settings that realistically can be used, a proactive school that requires students to join a sport that pays attention to the physical health of their students and groups such as the the boys and girls club, which typically has more financial resources than schools and parents of the children. If adequate finances are available, then there are very few kids don’t like field trips. A consent form could look as simple as this:
Dear (parents of student), in an effort to allow the children in the your child’s group, we will be taking a field trip to (a zoo, for example). All costs are covered, including lunch. Please sign at the line to allow your child to have this opportunity.
The time needed for this program is probably the duration of the students’ grade and high school careers. This being said, more private ways of establishing program goal for those who continue to gain an unhealthy amount of weight in order to save that student from being embarrassed. Children primarily need to learn about about making lifestyle choices, and using a slow program over time is pivotal. If the kids are made to exercise too much or eat too healthy food, they will leave school feeling adverse to the whole process of gave songs.
The resources needed are the necessity of more physical education teachers or monitors. A counselor should be on board because being severely overweight as a kid can be traumatic, depending on how the individual is treated, especially if they are bullied. Partnerships with fundraisers need to be forged, and government subsidies should be searched for. To reiterate, a short resources list would include the school the teacher works for, counselors, monitors at clubs, participation field trip locations, the Principal, people who are willing to donate, and many more.
Instruments and methods are really numberless at this point. More gym equipment at the school or club can lead to an instructor teaching the children a new game. Scales should not be used at all for grade schoolers, as it promotes body and weight shaming. In fact, it should be used carefully in high schools. To much weighing can lead to eating disorders. Self esteem questionnaires could be really effective in assessing how a student feels about themselves. Physical evaluations should be done privately, student by student, and then be counseled on what needs a little improvement.
Finally, after the questionnaires have been taken, along with physical evaluations and a full action plan for the implementation of changes (if they are indeed warranted), we can provide the Principal with our findings, and ask if any funding is available through the government or by having the money set aside. If this is taking place in an affluent neighborhood, chances are that the parents will have no problem chipping in for programs that they have no extra time to accomplish themselves. Data interpretation will be done three ways; for questionnaires, the answers will be sorted out, with outliers included (this is a real data sheet, not just a theoretical one); for the evaluations, we can take the mean of each category, and compare it with national results; Finally, recording observations about the children’s health will be documented.
The activities involved with such a program are often very inexpensive, however situations are always subject to pain. Say the school or club involved has to shut down and demolished for new developments, such is the case along the Western Coast of the US. Backup plans should already be in place if you, as the concerned teacher or counselor should know, if they have ever been in this position before.
The implementation of of solutions, no matter where, is always a great thing. We live in a world where parents may very well outlive this newest generation. Obesity is linked to so many illnesses and business profits, it is little solutions like this program that when combined, have an enormous effect.
